A new section has started on the Dutch Referee Blog: Life after refereeing. This is how I got the idea: Two weeks ago I got an e-mail from a retired Romanian referee, named Daniel Munteanu. He was an international referee and had officiated with René Temmink, a Dutch referee. ‘Got his e-mail address?’, he asked. I know some refs but not all of them. Little research finally got me in touch with a car dealer with the same name. And yes, it was him. Doing this, I wondered why I shouldn’t let these former referees talk about their refereeing experiences. They both agreed to answer the four questions to give an impression of what they do now and what they did before. Today I’ll publish the first part with the Romanian referee. Munteanu at...
As games are coming up, I expect there to be more blog posts since there is more to talk about but let’s see what time I have to unload them all! Road trip at the start of the week and a long one considering it was the first time on my own. Why you ask? To meet an Aussie! He had my… adidas 2014 kits of course. With the season ramping up and the latest World Cup around, I had to update my kit. The kits felt much lighter than the 2010 counterpart and so more comfortable. Only time will tell if that is indeed the case. My primary pair of adidas mundial team shoes which I use on grass had been looking worse for wear so I gave it a bit of a cleaning and in-sole replacement. I have found that other than colour fading, the in-soles have...
UEFA Europa League (Photo credit: Wikipedia) UEFA have announced the Match Officials for this Wednesdays Europa league final between Benfica and Chelsea. Clearly there is so little money to be made in the Europa league they have had to cut back on expenses as they have appointed a Dutch team. Of course I am being flippant and well done to the the team. Referee Björn Kuipers Assistant Referee’s Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra from the Netherlands. Fourth official will be Felix Brych from Germany Additional assistant referees, Pol van Poekel and Richard Liesveld from the Netherlands. Reserve assistant referee – Berry Simons – Björn Kuipers took charge of the 2011 UEFA Super Cup game in Monaco between FC Barcelona and FC Porto and...
I was desperate to do more matches. I got an e-mail about pre-seasons friendly but I learnt quickly that referees are very quick off the mark and as soon as they get an e-mail about a pre-season friendly they reply within seconds. I missed out on a few - gutted!! I decided to "advertise" the fact I was looking for pre-seasons games on Twitter in my local area and asked Kent FA and other people to re-tweet it. Within a couple of days a manager made contact with me asking if I was willing to do Under13games. 100% yes. Any game is always good for me. We exchanged a few tweets and direct messages and numbers. He phoned me up and I still didn't catch the teams names but that didn't really matter to me, I got a game. I remember speaking to...
I have a feeling this post will attract a lot of attention. Why you ask? The word FIFA in it of course! I’ve seen a lot of posts from referees around the world about getting stuff/equipment from FIFA and I always wondered how to do it so in a nutshell, here’s what I did to nail this scoop of items. Direct Approach This was trial and error because the first time certainly didn’t work. Simple as it was, I chatted with the referees who did get the equipment and they said it took a simple letter to the FIFA Refereeing Department. I drafted my own letter and sent it in but to my disappointment received a reply letter a few weeks later short of any satisfactory response. I would attach the response I got here but it was...
Stopping a Promising Attack (SPA) has gone through some major changes in the past years, with disciplinary sanction changing based on the position of an offence on the Field of Play and the entity of the offence. In this article, we will cover the basics of what defines a SPA and hopefully, give you a better understanding of the decision-making process to define the entity of a disciplinary sanction. First, let’s look at what the Laws say about SPA The Law gives us a clear indication that players that commit an offence which interferes with or stops a promising attack must be cautioned, unless the referee awards a penalty kick and the foul is an attempt to play the ball (footballing challenge). This definitely helps us understand...
Football referees on national top level will all appear in their new outfit the next weeks. Brands made all some new referee kits for the 2012/2013 season. 2012/2013 Nike referee kits Willy Loos, a sports shop in Groningen, has published some photo’s of the new Nike referee kit. Nike is supplier for the Dutch and French national referees. I’m not sure whether referees dare to wear one colour during the season. Björn Kuipers played it safe during last weekend’s Dutch Supercup with a grey shirt and black short and socks. I’m still a bit surprised by the vertical zipper. You can also follow The Dutch Referee Blog on Facebook by liking the page: The options below are just to share only this article. Continue reading...
One of the biggest parts of football refereeing is judging the severity of fouls. Many people, specially spectators, like to think they understand when and why a challenge is worthy of a yellow or a red card. However, not many understand truly why some challenges need a certain type of disciplinary challenge or not. In this article, we’ll talk about some practical guidelines that can be applied to most challenges and help us better judge and motivate a disciplinary sanction. THE LAW As always, the first thing we must do is identify where in the LoTG we can find more information about the Severity of Fouls. The obvious answer (or at least should be) is Law 12. When talking about the Severity of Fouls, we will always be looking at...
Angry bird attacks assistant referee Maycon Vieira during a match in the Brazilian league. He ran the line at the match between Navegantes and Inter de Lages in a Santa Catarina State Championship game. Metro described in beautifully: “But things … Continue reading → The post Angry bird attacks assistant referee appeared first on Football: Dutch Referee Blog for match officials. Continue reading...
Something new on the blog: In the dressing room. This time with photo’s of the referee’s dressing room in Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. Had some ideas about photo’s of different dressing rooms on the blog, but don’t know if people would like it if I only post them from changing rooms I visit (Send me your pictures if you have them!). That’s when I found out Constant Onstenk, secretary of the board of the Referee Association of Arnhem (city in the eastern part of Holland), visited the Emirates Stadium with his wife and posted some of here photo’s in the local referee magazine. He wrote that the dressing rooms were locked, but he could enter them after he asked politely. It’s actually a referee area, with three different rooms: a dressing...
There have been few idol figures in football when it comes to the world of refereeing but if you should ask anyone who they think the best referee ever is, Pierluigi Collina would win by a country mile. It poses a second question. Will we ever find someone like him who holds almost an elite status? Who do you think the best current modern referee is and I think slowly but surely, Howard Webb is stepping out into the limelight. Despite what was described as a “blemish” for the beautiful game’s 2010 World Cup final that Howard Webb took charge of, Webb’s refereeing has become less and less controversial and he has cemented his figure with players on the field including television viewers who are now quite well aware of his name. These...
It might be a bit late to help some of you who have worked with neutral assistants for the first time on this year's honour appointments (cup semis and finals) BUT one of my young referees asked me for some advice so here is my expanded pre-match instruction to neutral assistants (Yes I know it's not perfect and I may have made some mistakes putting it together, but I think it will still help ... 1. Pre-match – third team, work together, warm-up a. Third team – you’ve reached the final just like the players, based on your ability and have earned your appointments so well done b. Work together – both teams will want to win and the only friends out on the field are your colleagues so look after each other c. Warm-up – it’s an easy trick...

A red card made Robert Schörgenhofer from Austria a referee. That was about twenty years ago, now he’s on the international refereeing list and going to the u20 World Cup in Colombia. “I was a football player and received a wrong red card”, says the Austrian referee to Dutch Referee Blog and World of Football Refereeing. “The referee had a very bad day and I thought, it can’t be so difficult and I can do it better. That is the reason why I start refereeing.” Robert Schörgenhofer. Photo provided by referee. Schörgenhofer is ready for the youth world cup. On the 12th of July he already got his first match of the 2011/2012 season. “The match in Linz served simultaneously as preparation for the u20 World Cup.” Country: Austria AUT Date...
