So, today I was at one of those multi pitch facilities. There must be around 20 pitches there and about half of them being used. It was a wet and windy morning but not cold, around 12 degrees. I noticed the referee on the next pitch to me had a smart regulation Nike kit comprising shirt, shorts and socks, but was also wearing leggings underneath, gloves, a woolly hat and a snood! I thought us northern lads were supposed to be tough!!!

I have seriously considered a hat before (like a running hat to keep rain off) - and I think this has been debated, we technically can do it as long as it's not unsafe....but I just can't bring myself to it a) match control b) humiliation when the ref on the pitch beside me posts to this forum mocking me ;-)
 
Last 2 years I used base layer skins for my legs, couldn't find them this year so went bare legged through the winter. It wasn't that cold once I got going, but did have a few games where I was wearing to sets of gloves and couldn't hold a pen by the end of the game and had to wait for the feeling to come back before I attempted to untie my boot laces.
 
I tend to find if keep my core warm then everything else is ok. So even on cold days I'll just have a baselayer under my shirt and won't need anything else.
 
Thats nothing, went to watch my Mrs play in London back in october (i think)

The ref was in trainers, grey joggining bottoms and old fleece jacket (possibly over a referee shirt), gloves, and a wooley hat.

He was a decent enough ref, and i know in the grand scheme of things what you wear wont make a difference to how well or badly you can officiate a match, but to me turning up looking like youve just got out of bed makes people think you dont care and are just in it for the money (im not saying this ref was).
 
Ive never worn leggings or what ever you want to call them.

If its cold ill wear a short sleeve under armour type shirt (under my kit, obviously). If its really cold ill wear a long sleeve base layer under a long sleeve shirt.
 
Ah, but did the colour of his leggings match the main colour of his shorts, now that any colour goes?
 
I have a black skin tight base shirt for the winter and usually wear unpadded lycra cycle style shorts that can't be seen under my baggy adidas shorts. Despite my bald head, don't wear a hat or gloves even in the depths of winter. Any ref that is cold with a descret base layer obviously isn't moving around the pitch enough! :D

Law 4 doesn't apply to referees. So yes, a referee can wear a hat - even a hard brim (I usually do). Also, players can wear a woolly hat, no issue with that (being a soft hat).

And there's no reason why a referee can't wear a snood - there's the argument that if a player can't wear it the ref shouldn't, but I don't think that's a big concern for things like this.
 
I wear compression socks always for my shins ... compression under shorts (always have done playing and reffing, boxers ride up! lol) and then I always wear at least a short sleeved compression top, even in the heat (it is one of those fancy 'keeps your body cooler and hotter when needed'

if it is very very brisk then i'll wear my long sleeve top udner my long sleeve shirt (don't tend to mix long sleeve compression with short sleeve top)

Essex hard nut though init!

Maybe not, but Law 18 says don't go out there looking like a soft lad!
I understand from previous posts that you wear a hat to protect you from the sun and I have no issue with that. But he was wrapped up like it was below freezing on a really mild day. Each to their own but it looked ridiculous.
