Well i think one potential candidate is Massey-Ellis, but she needs to drop back to being a referee in the championship rather than assistant as she currently is at the moment...

Highest female in the referee system at the minute is a 2B. A woman in the PL is comparably a long way away

Really well done.

Wikipedia says she started refereeing in the 4th tier of Germanys football league in 2001.

I don't know how the German system compares to England's but it's taken 16 years to get to the top from there.

I can't see a female referee in the middle on an EPL game anytime soon.

Have we ever have a female referee in the football league?

I know she did 20 minutes of a Championship game a few years back after the ref got calf strain.

Is/was she then promoted from assistant to referee?

No, the highest she got was 2A. That was just a one off as of the three other officials at the game she was the highest level as a 2A.

Thought as much.

I know we have a couple of women running the line in the EFL and EPL, who would need to drop down to referee at a lower level in order to then climb up the ladder to make it to Select Group 1.

I don't think we'll be seeing this in England anytime soon...

The instructor when I did my course was a young woman who is a FIFA AR. I think she does up to the 2nd tier of football in Australia.
I saw her mentioned in a recent report as being the AR in an Women's Asian Cup qualifier in Pyongyang between North and South Korea! Talk about a unique away day.
And last week a woman became the first to umpire the top level of Aussie Rules Football as well.
