    Newly qualified ref- first match

Remember, it is in the opinion of the referee. So it is what you say that counts. Secondly it's all about angles. The coaches are generally static, but you are moving and can always go left for a better view. So stick to your guns and enjoy your games. And look forward to the next game!

U8's colts match- referee missed a blatent kick on opponent-advice

My two cents/ Get the player off through the coach, to allow him to calm down Report the offending parents for child abuse on the referee. We all make mistakes, and refs cannot see everything. The players need need to learn, the new referee needs to learn and most importantly the parents...

    Shadowing the lAR

How many times do you see some herbert shadowing the AR, and constantly disagreeing with the AR decisions. A while ago I had the pleasure of asking one spectator to leave because he called me an effing C. How can we stop these shadowers if they do not swear, but are just load and disagree...

    Awful Match Yesterday

Ref abuse in its various guises is never any fun, especially aimed at the newer and younger referees. I've lined at a game before where the first thing the new referee asked me was how to eject a parent. What a question? Later in the second half this Herbert shouted you effing c** in my ear...

    Discipline in friendly matches

Friendlies, personally I don't like the term. It definitely not a friendly for me in the middle, and if you started reffing differently for friendlies than n leagues you are only going to come a cropper at some point. Ref the game as you would any league/cup game. However you can practice your...

    First red this season

Totally agree. I had something similar on Saturday. Two players on the same side just could stop shouting at each other. 30 seconds in I called them over, gave them a righ rollicking and told them to stop. They did. You need to see beyond local squabbles and see it they might turn nasty and...

    Quick Free Kicks

Wasn't the question about taking a quick penalty? Never happens;-) For FK around the penalty area I always make them ceremonial, saying 'on my whistle' and showing the whistle to the takers. This not only reinforces it to the players, but also the spectators. When I have taken up my position...

    Tying laces, do you wait?

I don't stop for laces as these should be done before the game... However If I see someone has laces undone, I mention it to do them up at the next stoppage...

    Biggest **** up ever !

Over the years I've made some howlers, trying to play advantage instead of a penalty.. Blew my whistle during a corner kick..... and there's dealing with child abuse, foul and offensive spectators.... If you are interested, you can read more in my book, Diary of a New Referee...

    Club Lino's

I generally start by asking the nominated ARs how many laws are the for off-sides. Just to judge their knowledge. If they answer, 'its all about active or inactive', I just ask for ball in our out. If they can answer correctly I ask them for ins and outs, off sides, stand over the goal line...

So just finished my first real game

Well done - hope you enjoyed to. Don't just assume that all u14 games will be the same. I've reffed Premier Elite U12 and they nearly run me off the pitch, great interlink play and continuous banter. Then in some u15/16 games the lads can barely run.. Find the league that suits you, your...

What are good age levels to start with

mmm.. I feel its down to the level of the league. I have reffed U12 Premier Elite Teams [just short of academy teams] who know how to pass the ball. Great game but a lot of movement for the man in the middle. Then there's 15-16 'lower league' games and the pace is walking, with the odd saunter...
