Trotters v Wendies

Also look at the time factor, is it 89 minutes to go or last minute of the game? The current score etc.

The Referee Store
No, because to win a football game, you need to outscore your opponent. Having the goal is technically therefore more advantageous than not having a goal and your opponents being down a man.
Not just technically.

A goal is the ultimate end-game of an advantage call, and the desire is for goals.

So yes, a goal is a bigger advantage than a maybe goal+player sent off.

Reversed.......So a goal in the first minute is more advantageous than facing 89 minutes with 10 men? Do me a favour lol

Yes, because you're closer to winning the game then. Good luck selling it where you rule a goal out, send the player off and the team don't score (and potentially lose).

And it’s the refs fault that they missed the pen??
This was brought in to pander to the leagues not wanting triple whammy!

You're mixing this up with the law change about not sending off a player who commits DOGSO whilst giving away a penalty challenging for the ball. For the case in the OP here there hasn't been a law change, it has been like this for many years.

Speaking as a former coach, I would always rather have the goal than a penalty and playing against 10. We see it time and time again where a team goes down to 10 and shuts up shop, and on many occasions the team with 11 aren't able to break them down. Certainly at the time this happened in the game (68 minutes) I would much rather have the goal.

The selling is at the time the players know they have a pen and one less opponent. It wont be a hard sell if its in say the first half. If they miss the pen, they wont blame you for it. A different story if its in the 89th minute and the match is a draw or down by one goal.
The flip side is you play advantage and they miss an easy tap in. Good luck selling the advantage decision. Surly you wont give them two bites at the cherry.

There is no clear cut answer. For me, I'd still say good decision by the referee on this occasion. The players decided to score a goal so I'd go with that. Its an easy sell.

I'd argue that the lotg support a goal over penalty and red card.

A player is cautioned when
• handles the ball in an attempt to score a goal (whether or not the attempt is
successful) or in an unsuccessful attempt to prevent a goal.

Consider a scenario whereby the ball goes in immediately following an attempted dogso handball. Are you really gunna blow the whistle and disallow a goal.
The offended team might accept until they miss the penalty, then you are in for it.

At the end of the day the game is about goals and how many each side can stick in the onion bag. Vast majority of law changes are usually about allowing more goal scoring ops particularly changes to offside etc.

If you are gunna award a pen and red card you better do it quickly before the other team actually score.

That’s fine James but if that’s true then you’d expect more scoring opportunities against 10 men!
Yes by the book, ref was correct, Carlos is still in saddle and we move on to next weeks installment of Blame the Ref....

But not neccessarily guaranteed.

I dont know what he has to do to get the sack. Chairman is a non footballing bloke so maybe he buys the "we will still get promoted".
He said he would walk if he lost the fan base but that seems to be a load of cobblers as well.

Flouting FA rules on funding football clubs will come home to roost sometime soon. Have you ever wondered who owns D-Taxis or Elav8????
Spurious sponsorship contracts with yourself is surely against the regulations? Let’s hope it’s just points deductions!

And buying tickets for sob stories.. one of his many ways of pumping in the cash. Lets hope he knows what he is doing.. he strikes me as the type to have checked all the rules and keep things above board. Lets hope the commercial sides are sorted asap... no kits but the 2017-18 calendars are in - allegedly

It happened last night in City v Napoli, first goal was blocked by a handball it seemed to me - no chance I'm disallowing that goal.

It's not the ref's fault if they miss the penalty but it's the ref's fault if they had the penalty with the concomitant chance of it being missed, instead of an actual goal which, as others have said, is probably the one most advantageous thing that a team can have. This scenario is also nothing to do with the so-called 'triple punishment' - as others have said, that's a different situation.

I'm with @alexgr, @AlexF and @RustyRef on this. Also speaking as a former coach, I would much, much rather have a goal than to be playing a man up. There's the possibility, as RR mentions, of the other team shutting up shop and you getting nothing out of the game or (and this is something we see quite surprisingly often in the professional game) a team actually performing better with ten men than they did with 11.

In the end, you're talking about a possible, theoretical advantage which may or may not come to fruition against the actual, concrete advantage of a goal. For me, there's no question that a goal trumps playing against ten men (a bird in the hand - and all that).
