Watford v Arsenal

The Referee Store
Penalty at 2:26

You can argue he goes down a little easy perhaps, but the defender doesn't get the ball and extends his arm into the strikers back, so I can absolutely see why the referee would give that. To be honest, I think I probably would as well, there's just about enough there.

Richarlinson clearly playing for it, but looks like a penalty for me (Ozil gets in the way of that replay from behind, which could have been conclusive).

Although it's the kind of situation for which I'd prefer the option of a free-kick inside the penalty area. Penalty is too much of a reward (as Richarlinson would never have been able to get to that ball if Bellerin wouldn't have touched him).

It's a dive and simulation for me. There might be the slightest little bit of contact, but he's then flung himself to the floor. Graham Poll was BT's studio refereeing expert and he said no penalty and dive.

Will be interesting to see if the FA look at it and do him for simulation, as given it resulted in a penalty they can retrospectively charge.

Does look like simulation to me too..there's what appears as an unnatural movement lunging forwards.

1st of its kind if so, will be interesting to see the outcome.

Glad that a few agree with my suspision that it was a 'professional' earning a spot kick. I can see why it was given at match speed but lets hope the dubious dives committee have a look at it and act as they see fit!!

Don’t think it’s a penalty, nor simulation - it’s just a case of a tiny bit of contact combining with momentum. I’d be happy with no call here tbh

It would be enlightening to know out of 3 not exactly who said what, but what the split was
Am guessing 1 yes, 1 no and 1 don't know......

Yep same for me but it certainly wasn't a "scandalous" decision:rolleyes: and if had been at other end Mr W would have been shouting for it all day long!

Softest penalty of the weekend!!! Not a penalty for me......Thoughts?
The amount of penalties being given for minimal/nearly non-existent contact is increasing.

I honestly believe this player exaggerated a slight touch to get the pen.

I'm not sure what the answer is but this trend is getting worse.

I wonder if this penalty was psychologically driven by the recent incident where the player against Arsenal "stayed on his feet" and no penalty was given.

Anyone see the Soton penalty v Toons, yes it’s a foul and a pen but watch the ‘trained’ dive that the striker does to exaggerate the fall. Rear view showed it fantastic he pirouettes his leg as if by magic.

That one was different though as it was a ridiculous challenge by the defender and the only possible outcome there was a penalty.

Yes, ITS A PEN, but watch him go down slightly before he was actually touched 3,25'......
I understand what you're saying but if the defender is coming from far enough away that the forward has time to see it coming and makes a slight movement before what was actually and clearly illegal contact occurs, does that somehow negate the offence? (I'm not referring specifically to this incident, just talking in general).

When I played the game (many, many moons ago now) I was usually a goalkeeper or right back so I rarely got into the opposition penalty area but one time (for reasons that now escape me) I found myself in the opponent's 18-yard area in position to make a cross when I realised that the way the nearest opponent was launching himself he was almost definitely going to wipe me out. I started to fall to one side, partly in an attempt to alleviate the effects of the tackle which did indeed make contact and totally upended me. The ref had no hesitation in awarding the spot kick and a caution and quite rightly so, in my opinion, despite the fact that I had started to fall before the player recklessly clattered into me.
