Still no appointments for them - all 4 officials without a game across the two sets of fixtures over the Easter weekend

    Promotion Results

Quick question - what's the normal turn around time between the end of the promotion season and refs finding out whether they've been successful? I applied for 6-5 over the 2016/17 season (finishing end of Feb) and still haven't heard anything back. Is this to be expected, or should I assume...

    Accumulating yellows

It's the only way you'll see a team in red and white beat us ;) 29 shots last night, I blame the ref

    Accumulating yellows

Can anyone help me out - Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Sam Hutchinson has received 9 cautions this season, but two were in the same game and he was sent off. In terms of 10 yellows being a ban, is he classed as being on 9 or less because of the red card game?

Up and Coming Referee of the Year

Just to boast a bit more... I won!! (I'm the young one on the left before anyone starts ;) )

Up and Coming Referee of the Year

Bit of a boast post... I had an email the other day informing me that I had been shortlisted for the Sheffield RA Up and Coming Referee of the Year. Completely out of the blue and absolutely chuffed to be nominated, so thanks to everyone at the RA, my RDP group, and the other refs I've worked...

    Cochlear Implants

What if it's a swiss army arm? That could cause some real damage during a mass confrontation ;)

    Cochlear Implants

I was just wondering if there are any rules surrounding cochlear implants? I presume they are allowed, but was wondering if they are a safety issue as obviously they are a bit of hazard with being a bit of plastic on the side of the head (reference the pic below) One of the lads at my match...

New referee, can't keep up with game.

For me, I would suggest going along to your local RA meetings, or RDP schemes. Even if you don't interact with the conversations initially, it may well be worth sitting in and listening to the coaching provided, and the conversations that take place. You'll pick up loads of...

Most penalties you've ever given in a game?

Just out of interest, what is the most amount of penalties anyone has ever given in a single game? This Sunday, I gave FOUR... two handballs, two fouls. Relatively few arguments which was bizarre so I must have got them right (or so stunningly wrong that everyone was shocked into silence ;) )...

    Pass back or not?

By law you are correct to award the indirect free kick. I think I'm correct in saying you cannot enforce a "keeper it's coming to you", and as such as soon as you drop the ball - and it has bounced - play has resumed with all rules applicable. So as I said, correct to award passback

    Who to penalise

Here's a clip that might help contextualise this, as exactly that happened at Hillsborough a couple of weeks ago. Watch from about 2:40, it was the second penalty given in the game (a game that Wednesday breezed I might add :D)

    Lost 4 games this weekend!

You'll be due a promotion to the Premiership then ;)

    Junior/Youth Yellow card FOR DOGSO?!!

Most definitely - both academies here in Sheffield tell referees that they 'don't bother with cards'. In terms of dissent, or deteriorating behaviour, they must be credited for the fact that their coaches generally read the game well, and substitute players before there is any need to caution...

    Mass Confrontations

    You'd be surprised - I don't think there's been a ref that's impressed me yet in the time I've been going ;)

    Mass Confrontations

Not one of my own, but one that one of our local mentors brought up during an RA Meeting on Mass Confrontation that some might find handy... The topic that we'd got onto was making sure that we "got" all the people who needed yellow/red cards during a mass confrontation. The tip that he used...

    Open Age Games

In the Sheffield and Hallamshire CFA (where I'm currently doing my 7-6 promotion), the criteria is 20 open-age games in the middle. "Open age" is considered to be anything from u18 upwards. As others have suggested, get in touch with people at your local CFA, RA, etc. There will be enough...
