Recording Subs Times

First post here guys so apologies if I’m in the wrong place. Had a glance at other posts but didn’t rally answer my question. Does anyone have a tip for recording substitutes times or what do others do when managing subs. 2 of the leagues I referee on now require us to note who replaced who (it’s a 3 of 5) and at what time they replaced them.

Cheers.

The Referee Store
Number of player off, number of the player on, time they came on. Cross check it with team sheets if applicable after the game. Not sure what else you’d like?

Not sure what you need. League wants you to record it so you should. How you record it depends on your score-card/notepad. If the league also requires the teams to nominate (as per lotg) the starters, record all the subs on your notepad before the game starts. It make it easier and faster when the subs happen. Record the player who is coming off against the prerecorded sub who is coming on and the time of game it happens.

Non of my leagues required recording substitution time but i do it anyway as a matter of good practice (when returning substitutes are not used). I suggest you do the same for all your league so it becomes a habit. In fact my score-card has a placeholder for recording time for every event (actual kick-off/goals/sanctions/subs) to make sure I don't forget it. Even the ad-hoc notes I take at the back of my score-card have a time against them.

same as other two guys, are you making a simple thing more complicated somehow?
12 - 7- 45 mins ?
14-8- 80 mins?

and again as above if you have names/initials/number of subs already down in your book/pad/card whatever, just jot down next to that the number off and the time

Why should that be the referee's job........Record who comes on but why when and who they replace?

Its been needed in every different league or level that I have ever done, barring semi pro when even yesterday its who on, who off, but no time required
I suppose somewhere its covered by, the referee keeps a record of the game
Along same lines as submitting goal scorer and time.

For me it simple, the league wants me to provide a service and pays me for doing so. If I am not happy with providing that service (or the amount of pay) I wont make myself available for that league. If i do and accept the appointment, I am obliged to provide that service.

Are you paid by the league or by the teams in front of you? A record of the game is for me, a simple what was the final score. Substitutions were only ever who had entered the field of play for my benefit in managing three from five.........not that there were five very often........

The one thing I would add to what everyone else is saying is that I would consider trying to take details next to the player coming off rather than the one coming off. Once a player comes off, that's it, their involvement with the game is (99.99999999% of the time) done - you shouldn't need that space to make any further notes regarding that player. Conversely, if you fill up the space next to an oncoming sub with details of that event and he then goes on to commit a number of offenses, you risk leaving yourself a little short of space.

Other than that, agree with the others. Find the number of the player coming off in your notepad, write (for example) 12/65 next to that and then after the match you know that the player was replaced by number 12 in the 65th minute. And it's a good habit to do this as practice even when not required - it will give you a good sense of how long the sub should take and will mean you have fewer adjustments required to your procedure when you move between levels.

It is important as a substitute who isn't used isn't deemed to have played in that game for things like cup tie rules, whereas if they do come on they obviously have played in the game. Time and player replaced is less important, but if the team sheet requires it, and all senior ones in England do, you need to provide it.

When I was senior assistant or 4th official I would take a postcard out in my notebook that would list the names and numbers of all 5 (or 7) subs from each team, then a column for who they replaced and when. I found that easier than trying to write in the small spaces in the notebook pad.

Is that not what I just said........

I don't get a choice? Every league I have ever done needs number on, off and all but one league, time
Our senior version of I guess, wholegame, does not allow you to proceed to the next page without putting on, off and time
Same as goal scorers, we cant over ride it
Its not I agree a time of sub is needed, but most the team lines I have ever had to fill in, either with pen or online require it
its not for me to ask why, its simply part of the admin of being a ref
never really thought about it too much but a player could be cup tied and should not even be on the bench, suspended, maybe even not signed, there is admin stuff like players been cautioned in the 30th min but according to team lines he was not even playing and so on, all things that no, don't concern me as a ref but if the teamline for that league says, on, off and time, then that's personally what I fill in
as said, our national senior system does not move onto the next step without that information so its not really something we can get a choice on

In the leagues where we have to record the time as well as starters/subs on/subs off, there are ARs and it is AR1's duty.... but the principle is the same.

It's much easier if you copy the numbers of the subs ready onto your card before the game.

And... we are taught that 20:30 = minute 21 ;)

Horses for courses, I just do as am asked to do.
I have seen guys be given wee holidays for sending in team lines unsigned and so on, far less not have the information the admin want !

very similar to what the other guys have said for example 14 on 7 off i put the numbers in brackets then put the time just the way another ref friend showed me

ciley i take it in the examples you use 12 and 14 are the players going on

Yes, I will have prewritten 12 and initials (as we know its named subs who can come on!) then simply note what number is off
not every league I do needs the time but I try to get it anyway

I would encourage (especially for newer referees) using a game card which has placeholder for everything. Mine has 6 placeholders for each team.

One of my leagues awarded a fair play award at season end. We were asked to allocated 3, 2, and 1 point to best and fairest players on the day. Our association sent an email to all officials qualified for the league telling them the requirement and asking if anyone wanted to be removed from the list of appointments for that league. No one did.
