    Strange experiences

    1. A referee who told his A/Rs "If I dont see it I'm not interested" then screamed at one for flagging when the centre forward right hooked and KO'd the centre half. No red card shown needless to say. 2. Another referee who spent the pre-match briefing and whole match shouting "I know somethings...

    Match Fees

Never underestimate HMRC...... If you are working thats 40x match fee - whats that £1,200 - at 25% tax - less "expenses". Backdated to when you started refereeing plus interest and possible fines Its easy income. Just be careful!

    Match Fees

Thats exactly my point keep a record of everything even if it cost you to upgrade to work useage on your car insurance. Travel mileage is another (as I put in my earlier post) as are Registrations & Society fees. Dont ever think that because HMRC cannot prove how many games you've had they...

Anyone else find it extremely annoying how uninformed non-referee's are on the LOTG?

I went along to watch "Judgement Day" at Cardiff's Principality Stadium. A double-header of the 4 Welsh rugby teams. The guy in front of me asked me about a decision made by the referee. I told him I didnt know the Laws of Rugby that well - ask me one about football. His response was "I will...

    Match Fees

Referees in Wales were advised to ensure "work travel" was on their car policies as one referee was unable to claim when his car got damaged in the car park at a match. Its often the case it doesnt add much onto your policy but it does give peace of mind. It also underpins the "work" aspect of...

Anyone else find it extremely annoying how uninformed non-referee's are on the LOTG?

I saw Dave Jones, the former Cardiff City manager, at a Society meeting and he announced that as he "was a professional footballer so didn't need to know the rules". American Football commentators and "experts" take a big pride in understanding of their Laws and interpreations so they can come...

    Match Fees

I can speak on this with some relative authority as a former HMRC fraud officer. Whether you decide its a hobby and expenses or an income its down to you however HMRC deem it as an income. I know HMRC are looking at obtaining the information from respective authorities on referees fees within...

Scott Parker on you know what

In American Football the pundits all take pride in understanding the Laws of their game and fully understand why decisions are made. That way they can explain why the decision is made and make them come across as knowledgeable I have seen numerous pros and managers at talks/seminars who - when...

Where do you keep your cards, book etc ?

This reminds me of the Uruguay v Scotland game in the 1986 World Cup. The school of thought was the referee pulled out the wrong card...... www.youtube.com/watch?v=C07Lo8ver38

How best to handle a niggly match?

Santa is correct. Slow the game down. If its niggly then the chances of it changing are minimal. Petty free-kicks, minimal advantage. You'll get moaned at but you'll have control of the game. Same when a team is 5 nil up with 10 mins left. They know they've won the opponents know they've lost...

It was nice while it lasted...

I think that the UK will be open for a 3-4 week period before Christmas. Everyone will be out on their Christmas shopping & parties. The traditional Christmas Day with the family, sadly no Boxing Day live games. Then another lockdown will follow in late January / early February when the virus...

It was nice while it lasted...

And not likely to before Christmas. The Welsh "Firebreak" ends on Monday 9th November - after 2 weeks full lockdown - and the COVID rates are still going through the roof. I wouldn't bet against another full lockdown early in the new year once the Christmas viral spread is done.

    English Grassroots Return

The recent breakouts in food processing plants has been put down to car sharing. That, with communal changing rooms and toilets, may scupper everything for a while. The Premier and EFL have regular COVID tests so how will that work for lower Leagues down to parks football simply because too...

    Political Logos

Slogans, statements, images and advertising Equipment must not have any political, religious or personal slogans, statements or images. Players must not reveal undergarments that show political, religious, personal slogans, statements or images, or advertising other than the manufacturer`s...

How long before Coronavirus impact on Football is over?

This is a no-win for everyone. Sadly it has become massively political and a feeding frenzy for the media. A pal of mine work on HMRC contact centre furlough scheme and was asked "How can I claim money for my staff - they're all paid cash-in-hand?" I can think of a few referees who count their...
