Match 3 - Spain : Portugal

I'm with Padfoot on this one. Ronaldo, aside from being one of the world's most adept cheats, he shouldn't be afforded special treatment with regards to tolerating dissent. Players around the world will copy his antics, so all the more reason to clamp down

I like your posts. But that one is contradictory. Not offering him special treatment in one breath, but using him as an example because of who he is in the next?

The Referee Store
And he is world class. The clue being, he is at the World Cup, and am sure the ref committee will reward his cowardly display with at least a semi final appointment

U still cant fathom the foul itself was card worthy and why....
And I can't fathom why you keep harping on about that! Any ref worth his salt knows that it's possible to dissent a correct decision, a wrong decision or a debatable one. I couldn't care less why Ronaldo thinks he's allowed to react like that, he's wrong, it was way over the line and he should have gone in the book for it.

You're bending over backwards to make excuses for the ref when he was just straightforwardly wrong to let that reaction go with no more than a point.

Dissent is managable.
It was managed. Everybody is happy
Apart from some park refs that wont get anybody speak to them like that
I think that says more about the mind set of said refs than it does the player
Remember, nobody is there to see you. You are not the centre of attention. Folk have filled a stadium and tuned in globally to see Ronaldo. Not you prove a point because you want to flex your muscles. If you are in it for self recognition then you forget your role is to manage the players through the game.
Nowhere, from Zambia to Greenland will anybody be calling that ref a bag of crisps for his performance. Instead they are still marvelling at the spectacle that they saw. Which means the game has been expertly managed.

The referee is in an impossible position tbh
Ronaldo's behavior is far removed from normal, but if he ends up walking because of his ego, the referee would get slated

If that was a video from a Sunday league match and the ref there let a winger away what that, you'd be at the front of the line of people (correctly) saying "last week's ref".

Just because he's one of the top ref's at a global competition, doesn't mean everything he does is right, and doesn't mean the LOTG change. Dissent is dissent, and that was some of the clearest dissent I've seen in a long time.

The simple fact is the higher up you go the less likely you get cautioned for dissent. It's not right but at least it's consistent.

Sometimes Miley you are so wrong and you refuse to see another's point of view.
Clear dissent....this may be the 'professional' game but perhaps they should show some professional behaviour? Paid millions to act like prima donnas.

It must be difficult to however, to referee an ego of meteoric scale, in the knowledge that if he walks, your career as a ref will also take a turn for the worse

I think the decision was wrong - you can see Ronaldo hold his position before he makes contact with the defender, it's definitely a dive. A dive means you can't tell if the contact has brought the player down or not, so you can't judge if the contact has had any impact on play.
But, I also don't think it's was 'wrong enough' for the VAR to intervene.

I fundamentally disagree. This vid shows Costa leading with the arm to the upper reaches of the body with no attempt to play the ball. It’s not 50-50, he does not challenge for the ball, only fouls the opponent.
It doesn't actually show any contact whatsoever. There's no response from the upper torso in terms of a change of direction therefore there's no pushing aspect. There's a raised arm near a player's head, a claim of contact but no view confirming whether or not contact occurred.

Can't believe you are ploughing this "no contact" furrow. The contact is obvious from every clip I have seen. And plenty of angles are definitive. Like this:

Anybody who brandishes an imaginary card I thought qualified for a mandatory yellow. Am I wrong in law?

Nothing in Law which mandates a caution. Also nothing to preclude a yellow either. Perceived general opinion is that the player should be booked for USB. However, this is Golden Balls involved, so no surprise to see it ignored

Wasn’t there something about drawing the TV screen to demand a VAR intervention? Haven’t seen it in this WC yet but I seem to recall it’s airing as a possible card offense? Is my memory correct??

It is. And it has happened. Isco after hitting the bar against Portugal.
Referree pointed at his watch.
Shows how much the players understand VAR when they confuse it with GLT.
