A&H

I turned a very qualified ref down for a job today!

Sheffields Finest

Maybe I'm foolish, maybe I'm blind!
Level 7 Referee
I’m looking for a New Field Sales rep and have had 3 CVs sent to me so far...

No 1 57, great experience, older than @minty, I need youth not a Gerry Hatrick! ByeBye

No 2 30 No experience, wants top dollar, delusions of grandeur on his salary! ByeBye

No 3 aged xxx, experienced, reasonable on the salary, LX referee, 🤔 sadly I want a guy who can work away, be at my beckoning and not at a County FAs or above behest.

I wonder if this career holds a few others back too!

1 I'd be glad to be that age you ageist #$%=÷×@#/=$

2 typical yooof, needs to earn his spurs

3 xxx age? That must be thirty also but if he's a level 60 he should already be on top dollar from fifa......

4 employ mintyref........only need 50k/annum, 6 weeks paid holibobs, free medical insurance and pension, did I mention 50k per?, company car allowance, not much for a man of my calibre........also very experienced.....

I really want a medium term replacement for me, 6-7 years time I intend to retire / go part time and pass on the reins. To find someone whose willing to work away and show the commitment and hours required along with the technical ability is causing me nightmares. Sadly the reason I never aimed to progress was exactly the reason I can’t employ a Lxx referee regardless of how competent he is!

Their have been many discussions on here about the commitment required to climb the ladder I just thought my professional life and ex referee life would ever cross paths...

This just shows your lack of understanding of the promotion process.
Work comes first. That's is the mantra we are always told at all meetings. You do what pays the bills. Refereeing a close second.
Unless the candidate said he couldnt meet the demands of the job due to refereeing then being a level whatever referee isn't really a factor to exclude them from the job, in my opinion of course ; if they have the skills, understand the requirements of the work and can demonstrate an ability to balance worklife home life and refereeing.
Feel sorry for candidate 1. I hope there were other reasons other than age as to why he wasn't considered for the role 😉

James, I haven’t revealed all the facts of the candidates but safe to say it was mentioned about having a regulated routine!

I'd expect all my candidates to be capable of all the facets required. I don't care what colour, creed, gender, black, white, yellow, green. When a candidate specifically mentioned his level, my ears were *****ed, then other comments, my ears were really *****ed. I'd gone from , brilliant, one of the brethren to unemployable (by me) in 10 seconds!!!

30 is a great age, sadly, at that age I’m sending him to meet mid and upper management types and his figures will grow in time. So will the salary and bonus achievement. This chuff wanted top dollar up front... I don’t think so 😬

I’ve set quite a few criteria’s and he didn’t meet them, He’d probably fail the fitness test too 😎 Next!
But the point you made on here was solely based on his age calling him a "Gerry Hatrick"

As for the referee candidate, if the job description was clear that working scheduled Saturdays and late into evenings was needed, I'd expect them to have a credible answer in the interview process as to how they would balance that. If the role entails a boss calling on a Friday evening to say "drop everything, you have to come to work tomorrow, cancel any plans you have" then maybe it's an issue with the way the business is run and not the candidate.

Annunciation of refereeing level would deter me from the candidate, especially if the job conflicts with the playing season

1. It is illegal to discriminate based on a person's age.
2. 30 is hardly "youth", but you do get people with delusions of grandeur.
3. Did he tell you that refereeing would take priority over the job, if he had been successful, or did you make a knee jerk reaction based on having absolutely no understanding of the promotion process?

Would you have discarded an applicant if they played grassroots football?
