Virgin Game

2008s 9v9. Reffed a friendly as a favour before being qualified. Gave a penalty that hindsight probably wasn’t and got screamed at off one parent as his boy was taken out in a challenge. Didn’t know how to handle it so ignored it. Qualified since but haven’t done a game yet.

Sunday League u18 opening game of the season. Home team are comfortably behind (going to guess 5 or 6). Away team player shielding the ball out for a goal kick, home team attacker slaps him (I almost laughed, id never seen a man slap another man!). But he connected quite well and it was an easy red. Man who had been slapped pushes another attacker in the chest that came over to him to give him a bit of abuse. Red for the attacker for the slap, yellow for the push (it was only a little push but gave a yellow to try and keep control). It all died down as soon as the cards were shown so no further issues from the players.

Sideline a different story. A load of chat about how I should've sent both players off, including from some random bloke who told me after the game that he'd been in the pub all night and stopped to watch these teams randomly on his way home!

Poor pitch, poor match, terrible standard of football and i was wondering why id bother continuing. 150+ games later and I can't wait to get back to it.

Open age mens Saturday football, as a 14 year old in 1981. Got taken by my mum and taken home by a player, who was a neighbour - What was safeguarding??

East Lincs Combination - North Ormsby v ???? - can't remember much else.

Over 200 matches were completed until I quit in 1995, in which I sent off a player for two cautions for the first time ever in my last match...

Saturday OA cup game was my first game in black - the thing I most remember from the first game was I struggled with getting fouls correct when players were going up for headers on long balls or clearances. I also remember pissing off the home team something chronic as I sin binned their centre half when they were losing 1-0 and lack of said player led to them losing 2-0.... not normally a problem until I remembered all my gear was in the home changing room in the corner! Not making that mistake again!

Do you mean that was your first S7 in over 200 games?

Yes and the only one in part 1 of my career.

And I did difficult matches, not just local matches.
I don't think I had too many double yellows either, maybe half a dozen. I remember one in my last season I yellowed a 'friend' on FB for some dissent in response to a decision and then within a few minutes he did a retribution tackle and kicked someone up in the air, zero moans, he hardly even looked around, he knew what he'd done and just kept on walking. Still a friend on FB but was a naughty boy that day.

Ironically, my first ever red was for a double yellow. First was for a shirt pull and I booked him after the ball went out of play (still happy about that one...) and the second was for dissent, even though I could've easily had sent him off earlier, I was just too lenient as it was my first red

My first red was S7 for two C2's (separate instances of dissent), although I should have dismissed the lad for OFFINABUS for the first instance. Typical of a first red, lacking conviction and uncertain. Guess how fantastic my match control was in that game... Subconsciously viewing dismissal as failure of MC, a common pitfall of inexperience! Led to my most distasteful experience in black (with the exception of anything in latex, which we won't talk about)

My first game was back in the heady days of September 2014.

Not a great performance on any level, but, the standout moment was 17 minutes into the game there was a handball on the line.

Clear as day, I had a perfect view, identified the culprit, isolated him, gave him a warning. Opposition scored the penalty.

I cant explain why I didn't send him off, just one of those things I guess, never happened again.

My first red came a few years later, for OFFINABUS after a player screamed across the pitch to one of his team mates to call him a c**t, no complaints from anyone.

My first S7 came later that season (I think). Reckless challenge, player won't give me his name and despite his captain intervening wouldn't stop arguing so talked himself into a second caution for dissent.

For the handball, did the other team want a red? I’ve never had it, but seen it, when there is a red card offence (usually a DOGSO) and the opposition actually don’t want you to give the red cars. Must be a weird one to deal with

I have, last minute, team losing 5-1, defender pulls a worldly out, I show the red and I’m surrounded by virtually everyone pleading for just a yellow.... it’s quite a skill to have both sides thinking you're a harsh £&@t 😂

It is a strange one because then both teams might think you're an 'expletive' even though you've done the right thing and even helped one of them...

Maybe, had it been 1-1, no one would have blinked at the RC, but at 5-1 the game was done and the RC made no difference really!! Just extra bunce to the County FA!!! I was never there to be Mr Popular!!

You sure that the shot was on target? I mean, at 5-1 and in the last min of an amateur game when nobody wants a red surely there's every chance that the shot was just off target and not DOGSO.....

Hehe, it was 100% on target, he'd of made Save of the Week on MOTD!!! ;)

I had a cup semi years ago, and sent the Home goalkeeper off after 15 minutes. The score was 0-1 and an opponent played the ball past the keeper and went to run past him to put it away. The keeper rugby tackled the forward, grabbing him round the waist and pulling him over. Every player on the pitch was telling me not to send him off! When I showed red everybody was telling me that I'd spoiled the game - it finished 0-9 for goals and 9-11 for players, because one of them just wouldn't shut up. The away team won the league by some distance that year.
As I told them at the time, if I didn't send him off and he saves the penalty then it's still 0-1 with 75 minutes left and 11 v 11 and it's a different game. If the home team had won then the away team wouldn't have been telling me what a good game I'd had! They'd have been livid that I'd done what they'd been telling me to do!

Before the game I'd spoken to the league Chairman who was at the game and mentioned to him that I'd never refereed a game with him watching and not sent someone off. It was many years before I ever did!

I too sent a player off in front of the League sec (ex refereee) in a cup game, chirpy midfield (captain) called my CAR a cheating &(£t as he wrongly flagged the direction of a ball out of play. He was right in his face and didn't hold back... I banged him a red and he then ran over the pitch to tell tales on me to try and get some change in my decision via him but he laughed and said he'd of sent him off too...My decision was made and no input from him would have changed it but he agreed with me and the player missed the rest of the game and their eventual victory. Wasn't my first game and I'm sure had it been that way I'd of probably brushed it under the carpet as heat of the moment but the Ct word to a MO is pretty nasty and he deserved his rest!
