Brighton v Manchester United - Handball after final whistle

Hi all, in the BRIMUN game, Maupay handballed in the box (which was a penalty), but wasn't given at the time, the referee blew the final whistle and then went over to the VAR stand to check it and awarded it after FT is called; I had no idea they can do that? Has anyone seen this referenced in the LOTG?

The Referee Store
Not in LOTG (I don't think anyway) but in original protocol .

Duplicate thread by the way

We also had confirmation in this game, as some suspected, that the commentators do hear the audio from the VAR (but not the referee.)

How?

With the "they're checking for violent conduct, and the check is complete" stuff?

That's part of the VAR implementation. Notification is given to media for all VAR checks/etc, including the result of each check.

The BT commentator Darren Fletcher said 'Just to explain what we can hear, we hear what Simon Hooper is saying to Chris Kavanagh but not Chris Kavanagh's response. Simon Hooper is saying he thinks the Brighton player initiated the contact'.

I've suspected this before from what other commentators have said although I don't think it applies to every game.

No issue with the end of match stuff. The s**tty cherry on a horribly tricky match to referee.

The one I'm less sure about is the overturned penalty. That's not even in the "should stick with the onfield decision" grey area for me, that's just a penalty!

Wouldn't it have been interesting if the penalty was saved but someone knocked the rebound in? The final whistle had already gone...

Totally agree. How that got as far as on field review, nevermind a no penalty decision.

The attacker pulls Pogba’s shirt, and that in turn could be the cause for the knee-to-thigh contact. At running speed that’s potentially enough to unsettle his balance causing the collision.

Anyway I’m clearly in the minority camp on Saturdays big calls but I’m not fussed about it.

They say that decisions even themselves out over the season.

This shouldn't have been overturned but Palace shouldn't have got a penalty last week so it has evened out.

Yes I am a United fan (for my sins)

the final whistle was blown game over
So in the last kick of the game that goes in the back of the net you award the winning goal and the you blow full time. Then you notice your assistant has his flag up for offside. Do you reverse the goal decision or do you say "the final whistle was blown game over"?

How about similar situation, scramble in the goalmouth and the keeper tips the ball over the bar. You then blow full-time. Amongst the protest of attackers, you notice your assistant has his flag up. He tells you he is 100% certain it was a defender who tipped the ball over the bar. Do you go for a send off and a pen or do you say "the final whistle was blown game over"?

First scenario:

I'm not blowing the whistle as soon as the ball hits the net. I'd be doing it pretty much on the kick off restart.

Second scenario:

Assuming it's neutral AR's that would have been covered in my pre match. If I'm in a credible position to give a decision I want zero involvement from my AR to exactly avoid this type scenario, my instructions are that I'll stand or fall by my decision. If I've not got a good angle I'll be looking at my AR for help which will be very clear to them, in which case they are flagging for the penalty and I'm going with them, most likely after a quick consultation around confirming the offence and the sanction.

Now that we know what you do in your scenarios, what would you do in my scenarios? If it makes it any easier let's say it is me who is the referee. What would you recommend me do? (in my scenarios, let's not change it so that i would avoid getting there because I am already in that situation)
