Refereeing Essentials

If you ref on fields with another filed next to it, consider whistles with different tones. The Acme Tornado that looks like a bent stick of gum or the Fox 40 Pearl each have distinct sounds that are different from the regular Fox 40 and other whistles most refs use.
Yeah i have the pearl and it does come in handy!

Out of interest, why do you want to be blowing up balls? Its not your responsibility.
Also why 'ref coin'?
It's not our responsility but because most amatuer coaches blow the football to silly pressures, it makes the ball difficult to control! Get the pressure correct makes for better control by the players and a better game.

Anyone who has aspirations of progressing to senior football needs to get used to cold legs as you won't get away with wearing leggings at L4 and above.
Absolutely; leggings are a good idea for Youth Referees, but adults need to get a grip
Besides, if the temperature is in single figures, game will probably be called off anyway

No I don’t wear them for games, just training and i wear the shorts for the game of course 👍

Yeah, just to clarify, I only wear them when training, not refereeing 👍

I take spare shin pads, a pump, insulation tape in 7 different colours, a first aid kit, two pairs of pliers for removing jewellery (I kid you not), pegs for nets, a pressure gauge, three tops of different colours, pencils, pens, cards, coins, a cheap Casio watch (in addition to the watches I wear) and several different whistles.

There's loads of things that aren't my responsibility I like to have covered anyway so the game can go ahead.

For cold legs have a pair of Icebreaker merino wool undershorts. They are £40 but worth every penny on a cold day. (That's slightly more than one match fee.)

Do you also carry goals, nets, white paint and line roller?🤣

Or a cap, or glasses (unfortunately). Although the last one was recently discussed.

Pliers to remove jewellery? Do you remove jewellery yourself?

In a game in my first season a player told me he couldn't remove his earing without pliers. I told him he couldn't play with the earing in. There was a standoff that lasted about 15 minutes. His team threatened to leave. I stood firm and he ended up not playing but it was a very unpleasant experience.

Since then I have carried two pairs of pliers in my bag so I can his bluff next time I see him. They have never been used. He is probably retired now.

I'm not sure having a pair of pliers on you would would diffuse the situation, but it might make you seem a little crazy. Surely telling the player that he cant play if he's wearing jewellery and sticking to it is just the best way?
