So replays show blatant VC by Romero throwing Cucurella to the ground by his hair. Taylor talks to VAR, but there is no review. It should be RC, DFK. Instead, it's a corner leading to goal.

OMFG what is happening here?

(And AR2 for this level has had a poor game with basic corner/GK decisions)

The Referee Store
Crazy thing here is that VAR has seen something - the referee and VAR confer - I am stunned.

Taylor had a lot to do second half. It was always going to heat up with Richarlison and Gallagher on. The cards for the coaches were good. It was a bit odd calling assistant coaches onto the field to discipline them - but in the context of the cooling break, it just about worked.

The first Spurs goal also had some drama. Replays showed that Jorginho was daft, no handball and the Spurs defender just got a bit of ball before the ball came back up the other end for the goal. It was the thinest of touches though.

The fact that the ref didn't give it 'live' is very worrying too. It was right in front of him.

Apparently we can hear the VAR conversation? That will be interesting. That's literally assault.

As a Chelsea fan, I am fuming.... at my own side's inability to kill off the game and some of the decisions/non-decisions that Chelsea were of the receiving end of... and will leave it there! 🤬

First of all, I'm a Spurs fan.

1) The first goal is offside in every league and competition in the world outside of the Premier League. Richarilson is between the ball and the GK and the shot goes very close to him.
2) It's nailed on VC on Romero.

This is why the PL doesn't have VARs at the World Cup. It's a laughing stock in the officiating world compared to every other major and minor league with VAR.

I was trying not to mention Richarlison being offside. We've been here before though - if it's not nailed on in line - and if the goalkeeper doesn't appeal - it's not an offence (!). I think it should be an offence. In this case I think Mendy can see the initial shot, but not the flight of the ball, and especially not the slight deflection off the defender directly behind the Brazilian.

Surely keepers (like KasperS last season) will learn to appeal every shot just in case...

When Taylor reviews this game he will wish he gave a foul in the build up to Spurs first goal. Yes, it might have been soft, but no one would be talking about it now and they are certainly talking about what happened since. Don't think VAR could get involved as there was a slight touch on the ball and it was too long before the goal.

Romero on Cucurella has to be a red card, not sure if the ball was in play though so could have been a corner retake or DFK.

Tuchel should have got a second caution when he celebrated their second goal by legging it down the touchline. Perhaps not if he had run the other way, but he deliberately ran straight through Spurs's technical area just after it had all kicked off, that's as inflamatory as it comes and an easy second caution to take the heat out of things.

Then at the end, Tuchel has very clearly crushed Conte's hand at the handshake. It was childish at the very least and exactly what is wrong with football at the moment, it was embarrasing. These are grown adults acting like 12 year olds, throw the book at them and make an example.

Yes, so true. Could have given the foul - tiny bit of ball, lots of player.
Ball was in play.
Yes, and AR1 turned to see Tuchel running well past Conte's technical area. Though I think benches leaving the technical area is basically accepted at goals at levels of football, FIFA included. In this case though, yes, enough to bin him;)

Blatant red card, look forward to lots more off-the-ball hair pulling at grassroots now the 'professionals' have deemed it unworthy of a dismissal.

Accepted in "normal" situations I agree, but not when there has just been a mass mellee in the technical areas following a previous goal celebration.

Only seen stils not any clips
Even from them can see its ridiculous, but also, the theatre of the epl

talking points for next few days, attention and exposure

As Jamie Carragher commented "a great match for the fans". But for the vast majority of refs, ignoring the VC (using hair to pull your opponent to the ground) and the touchline nonsense (Touchel should have been long gone before the end); has made our jobs 10-times more difficult.
Either the law's are applied consistently at all levels or there needs to be a "do not try this at home" type warning before EPL matches.

Laws will never be applied consistently at all levels, if you have that expectation you'd be best giving it up now as it will never happen. Is there goal line technology or VAR at grass roots? Are you refereeing in front of 50,000 people at grass roots, do you have a police safety briefing before the game and a Premier League Productions floor manager in your ear all game?

Football isn't about referees, they exist to service the game rather than the other way around. That was a great game of football and Anthony Taylor contributed to it, yes there were some problems (mainly on the VAR side rather than on pitch), but you can't compare a Premier League game to the Dog & Duck vs the Old Crown on a Sunday morning.

My point is that TV games set player / manager / supporter expectations and at the 'Dog & Duck', either of the examples I gave are highly likely to end with a mass-con and you're then 'on your own'. As a fan - great game, not so much for next weeks ref.

I’m astounded. The most disappointing thing is, I regard Anthony Taylor as one of the best referees in the league, and I think this is shown by the fact it is consistently him and Michael Oliver representing England at international level, however, today, he has had an absolute shocker.

We could all predict that flare up at the end happening and AT had an opportunity to get rid of Tuchel when he sprinted across the spurs bench to celebrate the goal. Disappointed not to see a second yellow there tbh

I don't particularly rate AT, and this is a great example of why. Yes, he showed both managers a red - after the game when it is uncontroversial and has zero impact. Fits the pattern I have in my head of him generally not making difficult decisions.
