Last minute Sheffield United penalty; what do we think? I can’t see the foul personally but I’m also a West Ham supporter so maybe looking through tinted spectacles.

Poor decision imo. Nothing remotely close to a pen.

Was disappointed the onfield team couldn't call the red live, was obvious.

I think it was difficult to see both of the player's feet leaving the ground but it was right in front of the assistant.

Get that argument but together they have to get that right. He's jumped in right into the back of the players leg.

I thought Michael Salisbury was having a really good game, but just shows how quickly it can all go wrong as he's got three big decisions wrong. The red card should have been given without VAR, he came absolutely flying in and was totally out of control. I just can't see a penalty for the challenge by Ariola on McBurnie, yet a few minutes later Bowen was absolutely rugby tackled to the floor and no penalty was given.

That was dull!

Chris Wilder didn't agree with the red card, but manager's rarely do. Crazy challenge, called red in normal time, totally out of control.

Thinking West Ham probably should have had a 2nd penalty right at the end for the SU 15s rugby tackle on Bowen.

Was all a bit of a strange one. I shouted Red as soon as the tackle went in, big miss for the AR and Ref. The SU pen was a toss up but I wouldn't have given it and that was a pretty clear penalty for West Ham at the end. Ended up as a bit of a mare for Salisbury after a decent start

Does it surprise you? Been saying for a few years, identifying SFP on the field of play is a particular weak point with SG1 officials especially the less experienced guys it seems and the introduction of VAR has exposed that greatly.

Would love to know the stats on how many straight red cards for SFP is given on the field of play Vs how many are given via VAR.

It would also be interesting to see the dats parsed by thirds of the game. Rs may well be more worried about a red that they’d like back but doesn’t meet the C&E standard early in the game because of the greater impact on the game.

I've always believed that goalkeepers seem to be a protected species. However, this appears to be the exception to the rule. For me, the challenge was normal contact but to give a penalty seems very odd indeed. As to WH being denied a penalty immediately afterwards when Bowen was rugby tackled to the floor, if Refs are not going to be brave enough to penalise all the rough housing at corners, then the denial of a penalty is consistent.

There seems to be broad agreement from football experts that the penalty decisions were the wrong way round. Ariola was fouled by the striker and Bowen should have been given a penalty. Michael Salisbury's mark will be interesting, there's no doubt he got one KMD wrong as VAR rescued him so that is 7.9. If the observer panel don't back him on the two penalties he's going to be lucky to get 7.0.

Seeing this incident for the first time tonight, I immediately recalled the Onana incident at Wolves. I wondered if that had something to do with, a case of lightning striking twice if you will, and making sure these were given.

Typing this I had a second thought and just confirmed it. The VAR that day, who said no penalty was Michael Salisbury.

I think mentally he’s been done by that incident and that’s why this one has gone wrong too.

I don't support (or have a dislike for) either team but that's not a penalty for me. If anything, it's more of a foul by McBurnie on Areola.

I know still images don't always properly represent what happened in a sequence of events but for me, this accurately depicts how, as both players come together to challenge for the ball, McBurnie puts his elbow right into the keeper's face.

He was also VAR for the Palace V Everton game where he advised a review for the Calvert-Lewin challenge. I don't think he's having the best of times at the moment. He could probably do with a few weeks away from VAR and games using VAR. He should do a month of EFL games to get his confidence back without the scrutiny that comes with VAR.
