Thoughts on the penalty given to Australia here? Even the Australian media are a bit perplexed at Australia being awarded a penalty here.

Incident is 1:00 in, and the video in this article shows a bit more of the VAR process / commentary around it

My only guess is that the VAR has decided that the supporting arm is no longer a supporting arm at the point of contact, and is in an unnatural outstretched position, but even that seems a bit farfetched to me.

"Supporting arm" is no longer in law so no longer a prescriptive reason not to give a pen. Though it is still commonly used. Prior to it being part of law for a short while, the guidelines was that it is a pen. Basically a defender sliding in is taking a risk at his own expense.

I do agree though, going by the current common practice, it shouldn't be a pen. The bigger problem is it came as a surprise. No one was expecting it. A subjective C&O error by definition means everyone or at least most are not surprised about the decision.

Yes, I had thought I had heard about the supporting arm being removed from the LOTG (haven't refereed in a year due to personal issues), but it's still part of IFAB's Football Rules guidelines website. Obviously the actual LOTG trumps this, but just an observation.

I would say it is “in” the Laws in the sense that the support arm is a natural position for what the player is doing.

That's a really poor decision, and the very definition of VAR re-refereeing the game. No one is expecting a penalty there, his arm was exactly where you would expect it to be for that footballing action.

I'm amazed the 2 people in the world that think this is a pen happened to be officials for this match on the same day.
Embarrassing is an understatement.
