LEE v LEI

LEI second 'goal' wrongly disallowed for offside.
Would be interested to know thoughts on the sanction for the free kick that led to the final goal - looked like DOGSO to me? (hopefully the actual foul makes it to the highlights package)

AR looked to be signalling that the Leicester player was coming back from an offside position, which suggests he thought that his teammate had played the ball when it was clearly the defender. Potentially a game changing mistake as that would have put Leicester 2-0 up.

It was close for the DOGSO but I think the proximity of the remaining defender probably saved Vestergaard.

Agree with this. Poor decision and ref should have been in a position to help imo.

Really poor early yellow for Leicester 21 too. Never been a foul never mind a card.

Trips or attempts to trip in a reckless manner...

As for the DOGSO, I thought he gave a caution because he was going to award a penalty. I was about 60m away at the time though.

Yeah but it isn't is it (with or without your leeds specs on).
I won't comment much further as this is not a fan's forum. I still look at the game with the jaundiced eye of a former referee observer, tutor and mentor. It does sometimes impinge on my enjoyment of games. Even ones like this one!

For example, in the second half when the ball went out of play on AR1's side, closer to him than the referee. After a second he clearly went GK at the very same instant as the referee signalled a LCFC corner kick. I wasn't close enough to say which was correct however the fact that they managed to cross on live tv looked absolutely awful. I noticed the referee holding his hand to his headphone ear several times in the game, so wonder if there was a comms problem. Some other decisions where free kicks were not awarded did not look good either.

I would be interested to see the ratio of free kicks given within 10m of the halfway line to challenges made, compared to free kicks given within 10m of either penalty area to challenges made. Safe refereeing springs to mind.

That's nothing more than I'd expect!

But I still can't see how it's a reckless challenge. I think it's a clear error by the ref to give a foul in the first place.

Really poor decision in my opinion, wouldn't give that a foul if it happened 100 times.

Those who believe it is a foul, would you be giving a penalty for that challenge? Not a chance IMHO

I would argue it is the player falling over the momentum of a well executed challenge.

No chance is it reckless or an 'attempted trip'. Watching it multiple times, the ball is won cleanly and then it is just a coming together of legs (the follow through isn't dangerous or reckless).

It also doesn't tick this criteria for me.

A tackle may still be considered reckless (or even with excessive force) even though the ball is played. Where contact is made with the ball and opponent at speed and without consideration for the potential danger to the opponent, it should be punished appropriately. The speed or the intensity of the challenge.

Whilst it is sometimes used inappropriately and ignorantly by the likes of Wilder et al, football is a contact sport, players will come into contact with each other but that doesn't mean it is always a foul.
