On The Game

I'm wondering if anyone else gets this..

Whenever I run, after the first say 10 minutes, I start to feel a dull ache at the base of my spine. This then develops and becomes rather strong to the point I have to stop running. If I can find a right sized wall, I stand against it and lean backwards for a couple of minutes and it feels great and I can carry on running! It feels like a compression pain but no matter how much I stretch at the start it comes back!

Any suggestions on what it is or how to fix it would be much appreciated.

I was rushed Into hospital yesterday due to a lower back problem. I was playing in a game, carried out a back heel in mid air, as I came down onto my left foot, my knee didn't bend. The energy from my jump had to go somewhere, it dispersed across the bottom of my back. I fell straight on the floor where I stayed for 45 minutes whilst the ambulance arrived and immobilised me in full spinal kit. I'd lost the feeling in my legs.

Got to hospital where I was kept in a corridor for over an hour as they were that rammed... Finally got Into an X-ray 4 hours after suffering the injury. No damage to my bones.

By 9pm I could feel my legs again but couldn't put any weight on them. I was packed full of pain relief to the point I was numb. They got me on my feet at 22:30 and I was out the door within 15 minutes! They didn't check my back, look at it, have a feel or anything. All they knew was that I wasn't paralysed and no broken bones so they wanted me out!

I'm in the Navy and will be going to my medical centre tomorrow where I'll be requesting an MRI scan. I've had back problems like this before, but not this severe. The hospital didn't give me any idea what it could be, they didn't seem to care. I appreciatet that I wasn't an emergency case anymore once I could feel my legs, but i left with absolutely no idea as to what I done.

I'm putting it down to muscular issues. Which is what I'd say yours is, particularly if when you stretch for a while, it gets better. That could show a few things, the layers in your muscles could be twisted. I'm off to see a sports therapist on Tuesday to get looked at, I'd suggest you'd do the same. I've had a similar injury to what you describe before, two visits on the table and I was okay after. Definitely visit a therapist or a doctor and get referred in necessary.

Sounds very like my problem, mine also affected the nerve into the left hip. I didn't referee last season, concentrated on my running particularly xc last winter. Had to stop racing and curtail training just building back up now. Physio diagnosed a postural problem probably due to historic prolapse discs. Still strengthening the pelvic girdle to bring it back to a neutral position.

Be very careful about asking for advice on back problems. There are so many things that can go wrong with it. You might well have the same or similar symptoms to someone else, but the underlying cause may well be totally different. Therefore the treatment that worked for them might be totally wrong for you and could actually make the problem worse.

You really need to get it checked out professionally.

i totally agree get some medical./physio advice

Jesus DB, hope it's nothing like that - are you all good now?

Hmm, I used to have this a few years ago but I put it down to the wrong footwear (running in astro's) and a posture problem (broken leg left me with a outside step on my foot) but it went. I recently went over on my ankle trying to throw balls at a child (AirHop indoor trampolining, honest) and it's not settled down so I thought it could be posture problem again.

Though RR you're right, I do need to go see someone. Just thinking ahead to fitness tests next year.

Thanks folks

With back pain I recommend an osteopath.
I had back pain 6 or so years ago and where as an operation sorted it out the osteopath halved the pain in the half hour session whereas the doctors/physios pre op did nothing!

I also had a similar problem as yours. I used to become very tired after running for about half an hour. I had aching back pain and had to lean against some support to reduce the pain. I came to know that it is caused due to the damage of muscles and ligaments during running from a sports physiotherapist at Physiomobility - Don Mills in Toronto. I attended their training program which was guided by one of the top Kinesiologist. The treatment was very effective, and the pain never came back. It has also helped to improve the overall well-being of mine.

It's a nightmare, running around the pitch isn't the problem it's continuous running which is why i think it's impact related.

Just need to make sure it's sorted for any fitness tests next year!

Thanks for responses, at least i know i'm not alone!
