    6-5 observation report

Interestingly when at my promotion evening earlier this week we were told that when observed you start at standard expected, which means you start as if you are competent for L6 (in my case) and then depending on what you do you will swing either towards above standard or below. The RDO advised...

    Promotion 17/18

First observation this weekend and woke up all bunged up this morning thanks to the kids and their pesky colds. Hopefully shake it off by the weekend.

Rolling subs - should there be a limit?

I don't disagree with your approach, you are entitled to interpret the decision how you see fit. The league I officiate in we were told when the rolling subs rule was introduced that as a rule, unless the player went down injured and needed to come off we were not permitted to allow a team to...

Open Age My first red card...

My first was an open aged game, a nothing tackle, warranted nothing more than a free-kick but player stayed down. As I was checking on his well being the offender rocks up and makes an offhand comment about time wasting in a jovial manner, everyone laughs it off, only in the first 10 minutes so...

Cup Appointments - Just not fair IMO

It is sometimes a myth on how appointments are made, but as others have said, if you are available for games, scoring well in club marks then you will get noticed. In my first 2 seasons I got an AR and a middle in my local Sunday league competition but nothing at County level but I didn't expect...

    'Pub Football'

You will always get comments from players on a Sunday morning, sometimes they do it to try and get in your head other times its normal reaction, they have seen it on TV or last weeks ref gave a different decision. You will often find that some will say to you after, sorry about all the moaning...

Junior/Youth How do I get games

Depends where in Kent you are and what level you want to officiate at. I'm also in Kent, and for my local open age games I just informed the league referee sec that I wanted games and I get an email monthly with all fixtures and appointments. When I first started I also officiated in the East...

    Advising game being observed

As I said in my OP I am not on the promotion trail this season, but reading through some of the latter comments in this thread there seems to be a suggestion that there are a lack of observers, or a lack of availability due to them refereeing. On the back of this, has there been any examples of...

    Advising game being observed

Thanks all, I thought this would be the response and many of the comments about the players probably making life harder makes perfect sense.

    Advising game being observed

I'm not on the promotion trail this season but should be next. However, I was out this weekend assisting a referee who was and the game we were doing was to be observed. On the way he gets a call from the home team manager returning his missed call. He advised that he was just calling to advise...

    Schools County Football

In all evening games, regardless of level and requirement I always arrive in a suit as usually travelled straight from work. On the usual parks football it isn't an issue and I've seen colleagues rock up in tracksuits and not remove them to officiate the game as its too cold!

    Junior/Youth Couple of questions

The referee blew the whistle a good 4 seconds before it was taken, wall was set, just Mignolet wasn't.

    Referee Observer

It is very rare here that we have to call games off - I've only had to consider it twice. Usually we get a call from the local council groundsman the night before saying he has inspected the pitch, isn't prepared to let us use it so won't be turning up tomorrow to put the nets etc up. In the one...

Junior/Youth Goalkeeper dancing with the ball at his feet!

Nothing in it for me, I might, depending on the attackers response to his comment have a little word in passing but nothing more. That said, I can perhaps see the logic behind the OP actions, he does it to prevent any escalation, as next time the keeper does it, the attacker isn't quite as...

    First game back 2017

First game back for me yesterday as well. I was expecting a strong competitive game but got a one sided, well contested clean game, only blew the whistle 5-times apart from the mandatory.

    Cup Appointments....

I've always wondered how they make a decision. When I started I did a lot of youth league games to build up the experience/confidence and was appointed as an assistant in a county cup final. The referee told me when we arrived at the ground that he was surprised to get the appointment as he had...

    Horrible Little B*stards

As a referee you are always "on duty", like some other professions, regardless if you are working at the time or being paid as someone mentioned previously you are always on duty. As a Police Officer, if you see an offence and you aren't on shift you can't just walk on by. As a...

    Pitches

Local council usually calls games off the day before in the Sunday/Youth leagues around here; only once have I turned up to a game and had it called off whilst getting changed, I was a player at the time and the referee deemed the pitch 50/50 but it was still raining heavily so called it off...

    Mouthy player

I talk to players through the game when appropriate. I am usually vocal with no foul if there is some jostling, or red/blue ball if it goes in situations where it isn't necessarily clear so players know what the decision will be. The players like it. If there is a decision that's 50/50, like who...

    Club assistant referee - Responsibilities.

Simply ball in and out of play for me. I tell them that they can flag for offside, but if it is as a reaction to their team mates shouting offside or they aren't up with play then I won't pay attention (always acknowledge their flag but clear shout of onside). In terms of goals, I tell them not...
