    Penalty kick

I am afraid Mintyref's admission that he totally disregards the Laws of the Game I find neither amusing nor acceptable. This is not an inexperienced referee misunderstanding the Laws, or even an experienced ref playing with the grey areas that are left to his own judgement and ITOOTR. No, this...

    Feisty one today!

BTW, my apologies to everyone who I reprimanded for using strange euphemisms instead of the actual words when describing swearing. I now see that the site actually censors the full words. A pity, since on a refereeing site it does seem that we should be able to use the exact words rather than...

    Feisty one today!

I have just read through this entire thread, and it seems to me that one particular thing is leading a lot of people astray: on several posts we specifically have referees discussing whether "foul and abusive" language should be tolerated. But keep in mind that there is absolutely NO mention in...

    Arsenal goal - offside?

Everyone should be aware that impacting on a defender's ABILITY to play a ball has nothing whatever to do with the defender's DECISION whether to play the ball: in other words forcing a defender to make a play just because he worries you might get the ball is not a reason to call offside...

    offside or penalty

Actually this thread has led to a very interesting question. It is our job as referees to make sure that we give the decision that most benefits the non-offending team. So which is actually the greater benefit? A red card against the opposition and a penalty, or a yellow card and a goal...

    offside or penalty

RustyRef, are you getting a little confused? How on earth would their grief at the defender not being sent off increase if they missed the penalty? If he doesn't get sent off they get the goal!

    offside or penalty

Bester's post has actually made me re-appraise my answer: if a deliberate save can't be made with a hand (except for GK in PA) then this could still be considered a deliberate play, which allows us to reset offside and also allow no. 20 to score. Then we yellow card the defender. Simples.

    offside or penalty

There should really be little to disagree about here. Blue 20 is clearly in an offside position when the initial ball is lobbed at the goal (He has only one opponent ahead of him as he is nearer the goal line than both the keeper and the other defender). However being in an offside position is...

    Ball pressure?

The home team gives me three balls, and I always check the pressure. In most cases it is too low, so I will inflate to just over minimum, say about 9 psi (legal is from 8.5 - 15.6). But if the home team have massively inflated the ball to (say) 15 psi, this is a completely legal ball and I as...

    Referee Lifestyle compared

I have found this site extra helpful in seeing the approaches to refereeing made by many peers in the game, especially from different countries. It also strikes me that it would be interesting to compare in greater detail the whole life style set up (admin, day to day, cost) of referees from...

Iceland vs Finland, 5th goal - When does goalie have control?

Can't comment on the Iceland;Finland game, but I can clear up the Laws about control. The passage you quote refers to two separate situations, the bit about making a save only applies to the second: "The goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball when: 1 the ball is between the...

What about Type 5: who goes on officiating the game exactly as fairly and impartially as he did before...

...receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately...

Blovee said: Wow! So much for clarity.... How can this (OP) not be offside? If this is not offside, then we're almost back to when any touch by an opponent "played on" the offside attacker. You really can't have a situation where a defender gets his body behind a shot and it rebounds to an...

...receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately...

Answering Santa Sangria: this ought to be commonly understood. We had an entire session of our monthly referee coaching nights devoted to this, watching videos of so called "deflections" and being told which ones FIFA considered controlled plays. Our job (as has been pointed out) is to uphold...

...receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately...

I will try and answer as clearly as I can. Lets say red are attacking and blue defending. If the ball was last touched (a mere touch is enough) by a red player, then any red teammate in an offside position can be guilty of an offside offence if they enter active play (I am assuming you...

...receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately...

So many times on this site (and others) I hear referees moaning that IFAB are fools, idiots...don't understand the game etc etc. Apart from the fact that this is clearly an unlikely possibility, do their actions actually bear this out? I am getting on in years, and before I became a referee, I...

    Offside flag or not?

I fully concur with CapnBloodbeard's comments. But in the scenario presented the ball WAS intercepted by a defender. The point at issue was surely whether the mere presence of a player in an offside position was enough to call it Interfering with an Opponent.

    Offside flag or not?

But it would be a sensible inclusion in pre-match instructions to your ARs to remind them to hold the flag, and only signal offside either when the player a) actually becomes part of active play or b) if he is the only attacker chasing the ball and a clash with an opponent is imminent. In the...

    Offside flag or not?

This would really be the AR's call. As CR I wouldn't over-rule on this. If he flags, you give the offside. If he doesn't, you give the throw-in...and if necessary call 'not in active play" to the grumbling defender.

    Offside flag or not?

Offside can be tricky. If a collision with the keeper was a real possibility, then the early flag could be justified. But it was a VERY early flag if the ball still had to pass a final defender. If we remove the keeper collision as a factor, then there are only three ways for the offside...
