    Was it Offside?

Watching the game at the weekend, think it was hartlepool v Leyton orient. In the 89th minute near the assistant referee, a corner is cleared. The defender taps the ball back to another defender and the assistant flags for offside. No attacker nearby. Sorry I've searched for the clip but...

would any of you have cautioned?

I had a similar incident a couple of seasons ago and I was being assessed. The right back began coughing and slightly choking in an U17 game. The play was down the other end. He went off and the manager sorted him out. When the ball went out of play the manager contacted me and I went to...

Can your assistants not destroy our pitch please?

I get a lot of this during pre-season and it actually is helpful both in the middle and on the line. It helps you focus for the season. Now I always ensure my last season game is with my assistants on right backs.

    Pass Back

Just to clarify it is not with any part of the leg, It has to be the foot. I overruled my Assistant earlier this season when he flagged for a back pass where then player played it with his thigh back to the keeper. Lots of shouts but I cleared it up with the players. Law 12 The ball is kicked...

    Caution before kick off

I sent a player off in the tunnel. As they lined up he approached an opposition player and punched him. There had been a dispute over a woman. He didn't expect a red but he got one accompanied with 'shower's not far'. Nobody questioned the decision.

    Karma time for referee

Tell me about it Dave. The discussions with the losing manager afterwards were not too friendly

    Karma time for referee

    I explained to the ref.

    Karma time for referee

During a recent final I flagged for offside and the referee gave an indirect free kick to yellow. The keeper placed the ball near the penalty spot and played it to the centre back, about two yard to his right. As the centre back played I raised my flag as the ball had not left the penalty...

just when I thought the season was over....

Not good to hear but I think I will also be attending one after been told how he is going to waste me, when and where. He also came back three times, just in case I didn't hear him the first. Must be end of season madness. Hope you're ok with it all

tape the same colour as socks

I officiated a cup final recently where both teams turned up with black shorts and black socks. Ref asked if one could change but was given the excuse that they had no other kit. The game went ahead. Lot's of 'sorry lads didn't know who got the last touch. Defence ball'. :)

Open Age Offside goal in a final

Maybe we should dispense with Assistants that would sort it :)

Open Age Offside goal in a final

Oh I agree the guys are right and as I mentioned I informed the other Assistant and Referee that they were wrong in law.

Open Age Offside goal in a final

Given the situation on the final I actually disagreed with the referee in the changing room and said he should have allowed the goal, once he let play continue. I also advised the assistant he should not have raised his flag and caused the whole situation by doing so. If only all situations...

Open Age Offside goal in a final

I understand what you are saying but given the situation (and I was there), I would have gone with the assistant on this occasion and sold it as a quick flag. It was not as obvious as you may think. It was a quick flag which the referee ignored. The consequence of what happened in the rest...

Open Age Offside goal in a final

That is the question I am posing. Is it best to go with your assistant for match control at that time? I personally would go with the assistant and then discuss with him at the first opportunity. I always pick it up in pre-match. In the past when it has happened I have gone with the...

Open Age Offside goal in a final

I know he was going to disallow it because that is what he did. He allowed play to continue then when the goal was scored he disallowed it. Read the originally text. I was on the other line

Open Age Offside goal in a final

yes and so was the referee in disallowing it. So for match control if he was going to disallow the goal, better to do it when the assistant flags rather than after they score and chaos reigns

Open Age Offside goal in a final

CapnBloodbeard, the goal would not have occurred if the ref went with the assistant. While in law I agree the goal should have been allowed and as I said previously, once the referee played on he should have allowed the goal, their credibility suffered for the rest of the game, resulting in a...

Open Age Offside goal in a final

Interesting you mention pre-match. The ref said to both teams 'play to the whistle this includes offsides. If I don't blow play on' hence the chaos when he allowed them to score and then disallowed it
