Every referee no matter how good or how experienced can have a shocker! Please don't beat yourself up over it. 2 points for your consideration.
1) You're big enough to admit to the mistakes during the game. Now focus on all the good decisions you made, and that should give a more balanced...
I could be wrong here and quite possibly am. But I think DE is awarding a corner in this scenario as opposed to a idfk to take the " middle ground ". Recognising the ball has left the field of play not having touched a 2nd player, and the keeper has not changed the outcome as the ball was...
Thank you very much David Elleray for finally clearing the confusion for all of us. The answer makes perfect sense to a point of Law that has proven to be surprisingly complex.
Not wishing to be confrontational. But this is a genuine learning curve for us all.
Law 5. 3
Powers and Duties
The Referee
Advantage
allows play to continue when an offence occurs and the non offending team will benefit from the advantage and penalises the offence if the anticipated advantage...
As it would seem the answer to this lays with the opinion of the referee, it comes down to individual application of the LOTG. If your style is to nurture then IDFK. Or a punisher it would be a goal. Both styles are valid in any game so therefore legal.
Happy refereeing chaps and chappettes!
After playing Devil's advocate I think I like James L's response above all others. I think common sense and the "Spirit of the game" come into play here. Not forgetting that the attacking team are essentially getting something for nothing by virtue of the IDFK, after the keeper's comical...
I think most teams would prefer to take the FK over the advantage. As it offers a sense of justice and there is a definite gain. To that end the only advantage that works is a clear goal scoring opportunity. IMO.
The best solutions are the simple ones that are universally understood. With that in mind why not just play two halves of 1 hour duration with no added time for any stoppages other than serious injuries treated on the field of play. Thus guaranteeing a minimal playing time of 90 mins.
I think consideration should be given to any idea that allows the game to flow better but to have 2 X 30 minute halves would be too much of a culture shock!
I agree. As soon as you've decided it's a red then show the card. The only time I would delay would be to make certain in my own mind. However that being said I think you managed the situation very well. So well done!!!
I'd like to offer the view that the arms raised are in a "natural" protective position, inspired by the perceived threat of either the ball coming directly at him with speed. Or the oncoming challenge of the opponent. Also the motion of the ball after impact is fortunate rather than deliberate...
I don't believe I'm an expert just expressing my interpretation which I still believe in. Although I do agree Costa should have received a caution for his blatant dissent.
