    Offside incident

I was a NAR on a cup semi final at the weekend. It was 4-1 to reds and blues were down to 10. It was just winding down into injury time when Red 8 played a through ball, which appeared to be aimed at Red 9. However, he attempted to trap the ball and it just ran straight under his boot, and ran...

Indirect Free Kick Handled on Goal Line

Precisely. The 'lack of respect for the game' is basically a get out for ANY scenario which the referee believes to be unsporting but isn't specifically covered under the LOTG. You would find very few people arguing if you gave a yellow card in the scenario, and I would feel 100% comfortable...

    Sin Bins/Temporary Dismissals

I'm a supporter of sin bins, but this sounds like a total nightmare to administer at the grassroots level for a single referee.

First Time as a Fourth Official

If you've copied player names onto a match card before the game to note cautions and sendings off, you could use that to mark players who were on the field of play at the end of the game? Just an 'x' next to their name maybe?

Viewing areas count as field of play?

This isn't something that actually happened, but more a hypothetical situation that could have arisen that I'm curious for your take on. A game I had a few weeks ago was a bit feisty, and there was a minor confrontation between a player from team A and the manager of team B. The player wanted...

    Referee kit

I tend to find if keep my core warm then everything else is ok. So even on cold days I'll just have a baselayer under my shirt and won't need anything else.

    Semi Final

If you go wider on the field then you'll be able to stand midway in the half and have a good idea whether he is inside or outside the area. Quick sprint while the ball is in the air and you'll be in position for the drop zone. Sounds like you managed it fairly well though.

    Promotion 17/18

Yeah, the toughest part is the 7-6 because of when most seasons begin & end. There are 21 weekends between 1st October - 28th February, so you can do one middle a week and get to 20 in the 6-5 part.

    Promotion 17/18

Yeah, so it's 20 required between March 1st - September 30th. This weekend took me to 6, and I have games confirmed for Saturday and Sunday next week as well so that takes me to 8. April is going to be a bit more patchy as the season starts to wind down. I'll feel pretty comfortable if I can...

    Semi Final

This falls into the category of delivering what is expected. If it's borderline, the first time it has happened and absolutely nobody is appealing, then I wouldn't want an AR to be flagging for it as it'll likely torpedo my match control. Quick word to the left back to tell his keeper to watch...

Got the 2nd report last night. Standard expected in application of law and positioning, above standard in match control, so on the right track. Little bit annoyed at myself as one of the points of development was the same as my first observation, so I obviously didn't do enough to correct it...

    Promotion 17/18

I've had issues myself with getting caught up in play, so the advice to push further left is really useful, thanks Brian. Second observation went well. Couple of minor things to develop (including positioning at corners!), but it seemed that he was happy with my performance within the criteria...

Some useful words to calm down players/coaches

100% agree. I might remind them which one of us is carrying a whistle, but wouldn't ever mention cash.

Yeah, that's exactly where I'd stand with neutral ARs who I know I can rely on for things like ball in & out, ball over the line etc. But with CARs or no ARs at all, it seems that there is some inconsistency of advice.

    Promotion 17/18

I generally tend to stand diagonally facing the goal, varying my position to either side each time if I don't have ARs. On my first observation I was advised to get closer to the goal line on corners, the idea being that we're also the goal line technology at this level. The observer just said...

Or just referee in long sleeves all the time, like Clattenburg does to hide his tattoos.

    Persistent infringement

Blatantly obvious for us on TV who watched the entire thing, but if you're a Man United player you've seen Jones commit a foul and the referee speak to Jones and Smalling. And that's if you've seen it. Guarantee that the other United players were having a chat, talking to Mourinho, had their...

Some useful words to calm down players/coaches

If it's light stuff, like the first step of the stepped approach for dissent, then I usually say something like 'I understand you're frustrated, but just let me explain what I've seen/heard and then you can let me know what your issue is.' Alot of the time they just want to have their voice...

    Promotion 17/18

I can understand 6-4 as being a massive jump because of the level of commitment required etc, but I think it's a bit myopic to not let people try 7-5. I don't know you Charlie, but what if you're refereeing at the standard of a 5 already? They're making you stay at 6 for a year when you could...
