    Incident today

This. And remember, if they refuse to go when instructed to, calmly and politely inform them that if they don't leave within 30 seconds you will abandon. Bring your watch wrist up so that it is clear you are monitoring the time. At the 30 second mark, bring your whistle to your lips, and...

    Feel like such a berk.

When I was at middle school, many years ago, we would go by coach once a week to the nearest swimming baths (as they were called at that time). I would always wear my swimming shorts to school, and put underwear in my bag. One thing those times taught me was to check, double check and then...

Free kick against you if you miss a penalty

It's an interesting idea, have a line behind which players must stand at the taking of a penalty. I wonder why that hasn't been thought of before? On a serious note, this would appear to put the advantage back in to the defending teams hands, which is not what a foul/PK is about. Then you get in...

Not refereeing per se, but involves a report

He's no doubt realising how expensive the price is for not controlling his behaviour. Is he appealing the decision, the number of games banned, the size of the fine or all three? Does the CFA have the concept of an additional fine for bringing a frivolous appeal?

    Parents

Context is always key, and for me depends on your own age and confidence, IMO. For youth - and the OP doesn't say whether they are under 18 (e.g. 13/14) or Under 18s (17/18) - I know that technically you're meant to go through the home club manager, but sometimes if the ball goes out of play...

    Referees are self-employed

@JamesL - keep track of income and associated costs for your own personal reference, but not for anything more than that. If HMRC decided to make a thing about referees, then referees could argue - in this gig economy world - that we should have basic employment rights from the leagues that we...

religious band and arguing whether or not he can wear it

I agree with @GraemeS on this - the correct place for a medicalert bracelet, during a game, is with the first aider. Taping one up to render it safe on the FOP could delay treatment when required; having it to hand with the first aider would expedite. Unless of course we would also advocate...

No ref, no game? (well, not a neutral one anyway!) A referee shortage?

@Andrew.Rainsbury I'm on that Facebook group, and saw your post. IIRC I only see youth games needing to get cover. My local league increased the match fees to attract more referees - at the request of and with the full support of the clubs - and with a lot more hard work from the ref sec more...

Distracting a Match Official during play

@TomThompson don't forget that you are stopping the game for the caution. The IDFK is the restart, not the reason for the stoppage. If you could stop the game without needing to caution, you open up the game for teams to take advantage - for example, where would the restart be from - where the...

ADVICE for cards at youth football

For those that may not be aware, there are specific laws for mini-soccer, and for our community the most relevant paragraph is (my italics): So U10's and below, they get a bit of leeway - a judgement call by the referee. U11 and up, where they play to the full LotG (9-a-side is not considered...

    Bobby Madley - retired!?

Is it pure coincidence that Stormy Daniels pulled out of Celebrity Big Brother just before the live launch and they are now looking for a replacement? On a serious note, hope all is OK with him and his family, and ignoring the Twitterati.

    Non-black ref shirts at grassroots

Been away so catching up with the forums... @Ciley Myrus you miss the crux of the issue completely. CFA's / leagues specify teams cannot play in black, and referees must only wear black. The outcome of this is that all referees have a kit that should be guaranteed to distinguish them from the...

    Red Card Reporting

This has just dropped in to my inbox, advising that reports no longer need to be written for dismissals. New process very similar to cautions (other than for "aggravated" offences) - couple of drop-down fields online. The argument being that clubs cannot (should not be) contesting the fine...

    Change of cards in friendlies

If a team employs a qualified referee, then the match should be refereed per the LotG. If the team(s) don't want the LotG applied, then save themselves a few quid and let a manager / coach / sub / random bloke walking by take the whistle. They might do that for one "friendly", and then accept...

Not really. 40 degrees currently at ten past midnight and barely breathable. Don't go outside in the daytime. Oh, and £10 a pint.

Hah! I'm having to watch this in a bar in Dubai listening to analysis from Andy Gray and Richard Keys! Thankfully on a plane home tomorrow. Me, that is.

Offered a place on a course, do I want it?

Regardless of whether you continue to carry on and be a "practicing referee", I would highly encourage you to qualify as I believe it improves you as a coach. You gain a different insight in to the game than having just played it.
