    France V Australia

Greatest quote from the commentary team just before the final whistle... "The best player turns out to have been the VAR".

Not really a questionable decision the second pen.

    Your husband is a ****!

Michael Oliver's wife comments on her experience after that game... Very, very sad reflection on, well, I'm not sure what.

    Tournament fees - youth

I organise the refs for my club's junior's tournament. For me, its about making sure the referees enjoy themselves as much as the players do. We pay the same rate as most tournaments in the area, but referees get free food and drink all day (whereas I've done tournaments in the past where you...

    Junior/Youth Summer tournaments.

Only do tournaments that are sanctioned. These tournaments should have their "rules" signed off by their CFA, as part of the sanctioning process. Sussex CFA require very similar rules to what @Big Cat wrote. Yellows don't go to the CFA, but Reds (for SFP and VC, IIRC) do. I organise the referees...

Australian A-League grand final decided by VAR error

You can't argue that with 100% certainty though - it may be the NAR kept his flag down because he wasn't sure (although, he really should have been) - relying on the fact that there was a VAR available who would review the decision if a goal was scored. If no VAR, we may well have seen his flag...

    Junior/Youth What do I do??

Player retention is a challenge from the point kids start playing. Look at the logistical challenges alone... U8 and below - 6-a-side. Minimum viable squad size: 8 U9 and U10: 7-a-side. Min squad: 10 U11 and U12: 9-a-side. Min Squad: 12 U13 and up: 11-a-side. Min squad: 13+ The minimum squad...

    Junior/Youth What do I do??

I don't think its about protecting kids from losing, or from feeling like "losers". For me its about recognising when a player or players (or a team) are getting disheartened, and working out how you can keep them engaged in the sport. The objective from mini-soccer to youth, as its first...

    Junior/Youth What do I do??

I'm watching LIVROM and wondering if the ref should show some sympathy - maybe ask LIV to go down to 10 players, or perhaps blow the whistle for full time early? 😂

    Graham Poll

Where's @Peter Grove when you need him? Alas, we don't even test referees each year to ensure they are up to date with revisions in the LotG. What chance do we have with pundits - even when that pundit is an ex-referee?

AR signalling for a sub during quick attacking throw in

You have to allow the substitution, but when you as the referee are ready for it. There was a debate on here quite some time ago about whether you should allow a team (in a league where unlimited substitutions are allowed, e.g. youth) to make repeated short-notice rapid subsitutions towards an...

    Junior/Youth What do I do??

Whilst there's always the chance of a team suffering a pounding, rather than having a mercy rule, a responsible league should proactively offer mid-season division changes (either up or down as appropriate). Learning how to handle defeat is one thing, keeping kids involved in football through...

    Only one CAR

This scenario amuses me in some ways. Why should a club, through no fault of its own, not have their CAR used for offsides (if normal practice for your area)? If one team turned up with just 10 players, would you ask the other side to reduce their team by one as well?

Checking studs and jewelry pre-match (first game)

@benchwarmer - to the question that you posted... Yes, do check for jewellery and also check boots. These are the essential checks you should be making before every game. Other checks, e.g. under-short/under-shirt colour, use common sense and apply the spirit of the game, dependent upon the...

    Junior/Youth Adapting to junior football

U15's is easy - you enforce the LotG. What can be challenging is the attitude of the manager/coaches/parents, and how that then rubs off on the players. From my experience 75% of teams appreciate the application of the laws, including cards - I've had managers come up to me after matches before...

You send off a player, his team lifts

And you (second) cautioned (and then dismissed) the player for a careless tackle because...? EDIT: Apologies - I assume you cautioned him for the SPA, and not the C/L.

    Mustafa knew what to do!!!

I agree - that's why it would be a useful campaign to get that message out. Before I had my training on an emergency aid course to keep my coaching badge, I thought they were only to be used by qualified staff. You see them at train stations etc not knowing they are there for anyone to use.
