    Trousers..

Surely its about looking professional? It aggravates me more to see what some referees wear in the middle that might once have been black, before its been washed 1,000 times, with grey-topped socks only pulled up as high as their ankles, that arrive five minutes before a game with no pitch...

    Pre-match instructions

Will he have to get an alternative colour body warmer to match whatever colour shirt his CFA approves as well? And as for that hat (hood?)...

    1st Competitive UK VAR

Agreed. They are, of course, not called a Video Referee, but a Video Assistant Referee, and we all know that the job of an assistant is to assist, not insist!

    1st Competitive UK VAR

On a side note, and related to the link to an article recently about the pressure refs were under with travel over the Xmas period, how many officials are PGMOL going to need to service VAR, taking in to account peak time of 3pm on a Saturday? Are they going to use recently retired EPL officials...

New to REFCHAT: Level 8 Referee

Welcome Jacob, especially to another Sussex FA ref! One note - no need for the bold greeting and signature on every post, we're not that formal on this forum!

    Hi, foreign referee from Albania

Welcome - it will be good to hear your experiences of your national FA's support of local referees... Enjoy the debates!

    Ars v Che

Perhaps not the best example, as Old Betty on the deli counter may well have been better at keeping an eye on Tesco's finances than the team they employed specifically for the job :D

Not just "orange", but "Cone Orange"... That _will_ be nice.

    18/19 kit

Not yet, but I'm going to guess it will be mainly black, with a few other shirt colours available. But will we see socks matching shirt colours... or is the English FA just not ready for that yet?

    Charity game quandary

Sanctioned...possibly. Not sanctioned, no way. Sanctioned, but likely to have players drinking before kick-off...? Also no way.

    QPR v Cardiff City

Would be nice if the powers that be could inform everybody of what the protocol officially is. Here we are, a bunch of referees, and we have no definitive idea - what are players / spectators meant to do?!

    Injury time in injury time

My understanding of the great game is that the clock does not stop, unlike other games particularly on the other side of the pond. Therefore, if you have indicated +4 minutes, and at +3m30s the keeper goes down for 6 minutes, then yes, you add six minutes on (otherwise you are going to be...

    Tips on building confidence

For me - number one on my list is to know the laws of the game. Players will try and make you self-doubt. Having clarity in your own mind around the LotG gives you the confidence to make those decisions and ignore the protestations of the players.

    Bournemouth vs West Ham

I agree with you here @Ciley Myrus but I would also add that - at this level and with buzzers being common place - the flag being raised is also used to indicate to players _and_ spectators that there might be an issue. Both are a group of people who would not necessarily understand the...

    Journalist request- sin bin ruling

As a Level 3 Referee yourself, @Robert Andrews , and therefore relatively high in the refereeing ranks, what would your view be? Me, personally, I now only do youth football (typically U15 - U18), and I think its a good idea, needing refinement. I'm also a big fan of the same laws being used...

    Junior/Youth "Stop the game ref!"

And it's not just about wasting time. I've seen it happen (at youth) to let a team reorganise, on both corner kicks and throw-ins. If a player asks me I make it clear its not my decision - make the other team aware (although I've also seen it where a player is loudly letting his own team know...

    U15 game

Don't necessarily ignore what's being said from the touch line, but don't take it personally. If there is loud swearing coming from spectators at a youth game, I would be dealing with it (via the home team manager).
