Ever had to bin a fellow official - what would you do?

There are occasional non-team officials. A friend of mine was told by the referee that if he didn't see it he wasn't interested and your job is throw ins and offside only - only if I agree! Needless to say the centre-forward left hooked the opposing centre-half. He did flag only to be reminded...

Ever had to bin a fellow official - what would you do?

I can think of 2 incidents - many many years apart. 1. The Assistant swore at the crowd behind him - they were giving him some grief and swearing - but one decided that he would report him unless he apologised - which he did. Double standards of course but the Assistant would've been hung out to...

Sin Bins - are you finding they help?

I've seen the figures from the FA trials that stated 25% of cautions were for dissent now, after trials, there's a reduction of 38% which takes it down to approx 15/17% ish. However there's no mention of cautions overall i.e. increased or decreased. For example, in my experience, dissent is...

Sin Bins - are you finding they help?

Thanks for the responses. I see the FA are claiming a 38% reduction in dissent however isnt that simply because the sin bin cautions are not being reported as a yellow card? The FAW are bringing in a new automated system across the board next season - I doubt there will be an option to report...

Sin Bins - are you finding they help?

The FAW are looking to trial sin bins next season but it appears far too complicated. Looking at the guide chart a player can effectively get 3 cautions before they are sent off i.e. Dissent - Non-Dissent - 2nd non-dissent. If I was a player I'd take 10 mins sin bin any day over a fine!

    UEFA Referee Kits

The FAW have just stopped using Macron as their kit supplier (for new referees - they supply a kit as part of the course fee). The reason provided is their kit costs have gone up - but stories from newly qualified referees was they were waiting weeks for the kit to be supplied. Hope UEFA or SFA...

16/17 Nike Kit - Shallow Pockets

The Vale of Glamorgan Referees Society have just acquired their new sponsored Nike kit. After getting permission from the FAW to have our sponsors logo on the arm we were in a position to fund everyone with their kit for 2016-17. No one has moaned yet other than the shorts are on the large side...

    Getting a re crb/dbs

In Wales it's paid for by the FAW but the whole process of why a referees requires DBS clearance is a sham. Any referee over 16 requires a DBS even if they referee Youth (u18) football Yet teams have "coaches" who have violent criminal records but it is circumvented by not listing them as the...

    Poor punditry

I once read that in the USA all their sports 'experts' (I won't refer to them as pundits) have an element of pride in their role and learn the intricacies of the Laws particularly in American Football. They want to come across as professional and knowledgeable. Sadly in the UK everything is...

How do I approach tonight's match?

I helped out friends who were appointed as refs on local junior finals a few years back as no one would line only to be accused at the leagues AGM of only being available for finals! All for £5! At least the kids enjoyed the day but never again. In your situation I just ask / clarify what the...

    Tossing the Coin

I always toss the coin and catch it myself. As a 16 year old playing in the local Dog & Duck League Div 12 during the last century the ref tossed the coin and it landed in the standing water. As he went to retrieve it and said 'Its heads' the winning captain turned to face his team to enquire...

    Match pad / Score sheets

This is my latest variation - I've used this design for years and it works well for me (whether you like writing names in pre-match or just complete as you go along). As for pencils - I stopped using them years ago once CD markers came out. They work in wet weather!
