    Promotion dos and don'ts

Make sure the assessor is there when you do your pitch inspection!! I did mine not realising that the assessor was getting a cup of tea and he marked me down as he thought I had not done it!!

    Keeper clashes with striker

Well spotted. Agree with you. Out of interest, did you spot it real-time, or was it with the benefit of action replay, freeze frame, etc??

    Keeper clashes with striker

Keeper looked as though he got a solid punch to it, if so, play on.

My first taste of aggressive verbal abuse!

I have been away from this forum for a long time and recently returned. I have to say, MIB reading this and other posts of yours on other threads, I am not wholly convinced you are not a troll.

My first taste of aggressive verbal abuse!

If we can't stay calm, how can we expect the players to stay calm? Take all the good advice offered in the right spirit. I would be furious with an AR if this had happened and he had not let me know about it immediately. Apart from the sanction, so early in the game it would have given me a good...

    Offensive, insulting or abusive language

I suppose I didn't walk him as the comment was only indirectly aimed at me and it's implied. However, thanks, food for thought.

    Offensive, insulting or abusive language

Interestingly I always warn managers/captains before the game that I will dismiss any player who calls a CAR (and me) a cheat. I cautioned a player the other week who shouted out (deliberately in earshot) "the ref's got a red shirt on", he got a yellow.

    Dissent

I have submitted a misconduct based on verbal abuse received in the car park after the game. Unusually, Surrey FA reacted quickly and fined the club £75.

    Refereeing a Friendly match

My advice to anyone doing a friendly is : don't do it in the first place.

    No linesmen?

Having refereed in the AFA (Amateur Football Alliance) in London, the biggest loss of not having CAR's is the ball in/out of play. Eventually I left the league because of all the arguments this caused. Offside was not a problem.

    Deliberate handball by the keeper

As an experienced ref I was suddenly caught like a rabbit in the headlights. Fortunately common sense prevailed and I treated the keeper outside the box as just just another player.

    Deliberate handball by the keeper

Thanks, I got it right then

    Deliberate handball by the keeper

Keeper comes racing out of the penalty box and punches the ball away. There were covering defenders, so could not be construed as a goal scoring opportunity. I only gave a yellow for deliberate handball. The attacking team were screaming for a red. Was I correct?

    6 second rule.

Yes, you are right, wrong phrase.

    Junior/Youth Parents fighting

Fair comment, there was a clear safety issue in this case. Continuing the game would have put players safety at risk as most of the players had 'lost it'.

    6 second rule.

I did not think there was a law regarding 6 seconds any more. It should be treated as timewasting...caution and IDFK after warning.

    Manager refuses to shake hand

My attitude is that if they want to shake my hand then fine, but I absolutely never approach someone player or manager, to shake their hand as it gives the perfect opportunity to give you a 'brush off'. Never judge the sort of game you have had by the reaction of teams at the end of the game. We...

    Junior/Youth Parents fighting

Well done, you did the right thing. My first ever game was under 16, the last minute there was a brawl involving players, coaches, spectators. I abandoned the game, even though the managers tried to convince me to finish. Abandonment is the best way to get proper sanctions.

    Gareth Bale...

I don't understand why the ref did not blow immediately after the initial kick?? Red for the first kick for me.
