    Offside question

The first two responses were from people who are involved with youth football, one as a tutor and mentor of young referees, the other as an active referee. In answer to your question "How should I have replied?", a polite reply would be a good idea if you actually want views and guidance from...

    Offside question

Comments like "Try reading it some time" and your misplaced assumption that members of this group don't know about Under-12 matches will not encourage us to answer the original question. To do so, however, as the attacker stood still some 10 metres from where the ball went out of play, the...

    Offside question

If the player in an offside position does not become active by playing the ball or interfering with an opponent's play, there would be no offence. From your description the attacker was at the junction of the goal line and the penalty area line, and the ball went out of play close to the goal...

    Stockport v Wigan

As there is no requirement at most levels to "run left backs" I suspect that the story was missing some important details, e. g. did the referee's positioning suffer as a result of the change. The Observer should have asked the referee about the change, and then discussed any issues re...

    Stockport v Wigan

Back in the very good old days, Football League (now Premier League, Championship, Football League) AR's were with right backs in first or second half, left backs in the other. I remember a referee at Selhurst Park pausing the game after 55 minutes to instruct the AR's to swap across to the...

    First red card

Whilst understanding the points you make, a player that age needs to know what is acceptable. Sadly, the acceptance of language has changed because a generation of referees have chosen to ignore it or treat it as dissent to avoid sending players off. Last weekend (as a dog walker/passer-by) I...

    Goalkeeper Releasing the Ball

At the risk of extending this discussion about a very rare occurrence, others have pointed out that the text you have quoted is now elsewhere in law, and relates to the 8-second law. Control is not now mentioned in the law relative to the goalkeeper handling after releasing the ball.

    Goalkeeper Releasing the Ball

But control is not mentioned in this section either . . . (?)

How do you deal with constant minor delay when collecting the ball?

One issue in the UK is the number of multi-pitch venues. If they don't fetch the ball quickly when it goes out of play, they never see it again🙁

    First red card

Competition rules should/must follow what the Laws of the Game say: "The referee should include in the temporary dismissal period any time ‘lost’ for a stoppage for which ‘additional time’ will be allowed at the end of the half (e.g. substitution, injury, goal celebration, etc.)"

    Goalkeeper Releasing the Ball

@Peter Grove will be able to guide as to whether "deliberate parry" was in the Laws, and if so when it was removed. In 1995, for example, the guidance was: "with Law XII (o) . (15) The International F.A . Board is of the opinion that a goalkeeper, in the circumstances described in Law XI 15...

    Goalkeeper Releasing the Ball

As a group we are considering the changes in law wording, which I suspect has inadvertently opened this as a balanced discussion. Unless IFAB tell us otherwise, my opinion is that the goalkeeper is releasing the ball in the OP description. That said, the point about whether this is a hill to die...

How do you deal with constant minor delay when collecting the ball?

You can't insist that they run to get the ball, but you need to show clearly that you are willing to reach for a card if they don't stop consuming time by going too slowly. Use the captain publicly if the captain is going to be any help, or a direct and public shout to the player. A shout of (e...

    Goalkeeper Releasing the Ball

The understanding on this issue has always been that if the ball rebounds from the goalkeeper when they make a save or need to parry a shot, they may handle again, but the OP describes the goalkeeper handling the ball with no pressure, electing to put it into play, and then handling again, which...

    Goalkeeper Releasing the Ball

Good question. "Football expects" will feature in the responses somewhere. Meanwhile, I consulted a dictionary for the definition of "release" and found "to set someone or something free, make something public, or stop holding onto something" so I will go with "make public" in your scenario.
