    Handball or not handball

Good discussion. As an additional anecdote I had a fun discussion with a player yesterday who said that as the ball hit someone's hand (close to the body and accidental) then it had to be a FK because of the 'Premiership rules'... To be fair, when I explained about natural position and...

    1 Neutral

Had this recently (I was the single AR). We spoke to both teams beforehand and agreed that the home club would field a CAR and that they would take one end at ko so that he was benchside 1st half (on own LB) and I was there for the second, when more things happen and the temperature tends to...

    Considering hanging up the whistle

Sorry to hear your decision zara, but completely understand it. I've written about this on here before, but a few years ago now, because I found that I was getting increasingly anxious before games and not enjoying them, I opted just to do lines at a higher level. Going out as a three makes a...

Open Age A slight phantom goal issue

Absolutely! I've had some cracking CARs, especially on the women's game where partners do it week in, week out and are actually engaged. You just have to take them on their own merits.

Open Age A slight phantom goal issue

As you note, this wouldn't have sold it anyway in this case. To tell the truth, very hard to use a CAR to do this at any time, as they are not neutral and usually on their own defence. What would you have done if they'd said 'nope, never a goal'?

    Yellow for a DOGSO

Very good point. Only thing I'd add is that it also depends on the ref's briefing - some (many even) will say that they specifically don't want any input if it's outside your credible area. Personally I agree with you, but if that's what they want it's not helpful assisting to do something...

Translation of L11 deflection/deliberate play please?!

Yes, both tried to clear it but it skimmed off the top of their heads and went on to those in an (initially) offside position. I get why people don't like the law, because managers would need to coach defenders not to try and head it if they think someone is offside, but that's a high risk...

    Yellow for a DOGSO

Agree with all of your comment - apart from this bit. Everyone has to start somewhere, and it's a pretty steep learning curve. Dylan, you've reflected on the game and are realising that - unlike in most of the rest of the world - when coaches, managers, etc. complain it isn't necessarily...

Translation of L11 deflection/deliberate play please?!

Sorry - I included all your quote by mistake - I meant at the end of the first para?

Translation of L11 deflection/deliberate play please?!

Excellent advice in my opinion, especially about briefing club assts. It's come up twice for me this year (including last weekend, when I was on the line) - both times led to goals as well. In the first, the manager showed me after the game (on video) that the goalscorer was offside when the...

Translation of L11 deflection/deliberate play please?!

I think your final 'offside' is meant to read 'onside'.

Translation of L11 deflection/deliberate play please?!

We've been here plenty of times before, but to me this isn't 'safe refereeing', it's adjusting the laws to suit you and the laws say that this is not an offence. I'm all in favour of giving benefit of the doubt, but if there's a deliberate play for the ball then you must wave down any club...

    Am I going crazy?

You were right of course - but I think that's a really interesting point about the 'FIFA generation'. Mind you, I hate it that the animation still shows assistants raising the flag then moving it to the right direction for throws. The other factor I think that has really gained ground ("bah...

    Arsenal v Watford

I'm guessing that because it was seen, it was decided that it wasn't a C&O error too.

    First game

My only advice is to be prepared, but try to relax! Make sure you've got everything ready the day before, so you don't have to stress about the basics. Remind yourself that you know the laws (and you'll almost certainly be the only person there who's completely up to date, despite what others...

    Time Wasting

I don't doubt it, what I meant was that when users start saying 'we' it's more difficult to judge what they're saying objectively. And yes, it aggravates me when time isn't added on for all kinds of reasons - particularly when referees have identified time-wasting during added time itself...

    Time Wasting

The problem is that it comes across like some users are losing their objectivity when it comes to their own teams, so it's no longer a refereeing debate.

    Dortmund vs Ajax

I'm not a moderator here, but whether intentional or not, your response to other posters very rarely comes across as respectful.

    Liverpool v Althetico

Yes, I think this is it too. None of the body language suggested red until the player refused to come towards him, when it quickly changed. If it had been a red from the start he'd surely have done exactly what he did at the end straight away.

FRANCE vs Spain UNL Final Mbappe Offside

That sounds like one where you had to be there - but of course that is precisely why we are there, to interpret the laws (as they stand) and apply them to what is happening. As you say, story of our lives, but also why having qualified officials is an absolute necessity!
