    Commentator effect

Most clubs like to have some media presence and publicity but it can be difficult to find anyone to take on the role. I find many that do are self appointed with delusions of journalistic grandeur and their output can be a source of ridicule and embarrassment to the clubs themselves. Often they...

    Pre match chat with teams

'Hello' and 'best of luck' get me by.

    U15 player issue

I find this to be quite common at youth level, particularly the younger age groups (which would include U15 in my area). When checking a players name for caution or substitution they often give the first name only. Usually nothing malicious, just how they converse. Still would expect full name...

    Patrol path

There is absolutely a world of difference between having ARs and being on your own. I referee on my own 99% of the time and if I ever had a heat map it wouldn't fit any recognised pattern. If a couple of players are showing signs of a tussle I might spend a little more time and attention in that...

    Injury procedure

I've always understood this protocol was even more relevant for younger players to safeguard against injuries.

Completed first few Games, Looking for advice

On your own you'd probably get offside calls wrong more than any other aspect of play. I was once told that if you're thinking about offside then the chances are that it probably is offside.

    Leaving vicinity of the FOP

Locally we have had a lot of discussion about how this is applied to youth football. Sending a young player away from the vicinity of play can have consequences in terms of welfare. Our guidelines are that up to 16s, offenders may be permitted to remain in the vicinity provided it has no impact...

    First Game

For a first game I always stress the importance of being aware of the administration aspects. Check venue, paperwork and reporting requirements, competition rules (match duration, substitute protocols etc), is extra time and/or penalties a possibility? A competent match secretary should be able...

    Foul or no four

I don't see a foul there, as you say blue player just looks to be stronger.

MCI CRY what was the offence?

I've said before in these forums (maybe more than once) that football is overly tolerant of head high challenges. Were that contact anywhere between the ankle and waist no-one would dispute a red card.

    Cautions for Player Managers

I don't think ever ever seen any guidance on such a situation. Surely the yellow cards would have to be cumulative so receiving 2, regardless of which role they were performing at the time, would result in a red.

    Match fee for friendlies

I come at this from a different angle. Pre season friendlies are my pre season too so I'll often do a game for less than the going rate just to help get back into action. For me friendlies come via direct contact from one of the teams so I can pick and chose what I accept. Mid season or post...

    Advantage in PA

Exactly that! Also 99/100 the expectation is that you will award the penalty rather than advantage. I'm struggling to recall an incident where I have seen advantage played in such a situation.

    Signalling for a goal

It's usually obvious when a goal is scored so I generally won't whistle. An exception could be when you make a close call on whether the ball crossed the line. For the second part of your question, I always whistle for the restart.

Throw ins - just a couple of things

Provided both hands are on the ball at point of release I have no problem.

    Norwich v Wigan

Clear penalty and I'd go with a yellow, I don't think that goes beyond reckless. On the commentary - don't you hate it when the commentators imagine they understand the referee's though process?

    Reading v Cardiff

I can appreciate the 'going wide' factor but all things considered it's DOGSO and red card for me.

How many referee society’s can you Join

I could very well be wrong but my understanding is that in Scotland you can only be a member of one RA.

It can't be more disgusting and equally disgusting at the same time.

Deliberate Play / Deflection / Save

100% agree in this Clip 11, considering all the clips this was towards the top end of the deliberate scale for me. Defender under no real pressure and doing exactly what 'football expects' him to do in such a situation ie get up and get his head to the ball.
