World Cup ESP USA - Right to go down

Here's what I think, referees like this encourage diving.

    England v Cameroon WWC

The laws don't have to be followed strictly as UEFA demonstrated by using their own interpretation of the handball law well before the new law was introduced.

    France v Brazil WWC

I thought ARs were only meant to flag if they are 100% sure even in matches without VAR. If they are 100% sure, the flag should go up immediately (because there's zero chance of being wrong). This means, ARs are signalling for offsides they aren't sure about; why do they flag for an offside they...

    France v Brazil WWC

Clearly the refs don't have a clue because they made the French attacker leave the field of play after colliding with the goalkeeper.

    England v Cameroon WWC

I really thought this match would end in abandonment after the Cameroon disallowed goal. You'd abandon at grassroots level, right?

World Cup ENG CMR - The Revolt

England stick the ball in the net. Offside flag goes up. VAR correctly overturns the offside and a goal is awarded. Cameron are unhappy and refuse to kick off; they have a team huddle for a few minutes before kicking off again. The referee allows this to happen; good game management or week...

    Nor Aus VAR

I meant that I understand why VAR didn't overturn the red card once it was issued. If the ref gave a yellow card, I suspect VAR wouldn't recommend a red either. It's one of those grey area situations. I guess VAR and the ref thought that the player was obviously denied the opportunity to get to...

    Nor Aus VAR

I couldn't view the video on the link you provided. There was an alleged foul on a Norway player (mid-air collision) in 92nd min normal time and an alleged foul on an Australian in the 92nd min extra time (What a coincidence!). I thought you were referring to the latter. Anyway, I thought...

    JAM ITA penalty mess

If the officials are "fair and just", the game will be "fair and just" under any system. If the officials disagree with a team's view, it cannot be considered unfair or unjust. Referees/umpires are always the arbiters in sports with challenge based systems; teams/players can only ask them to...

    Nor Aus VAR

92nd min (ET) You're never getting a penalty for that. The red card is contentious. I initially thought yellow card (SPA) because the ball was going through to the GK but I can understand the red card since we don't know if the attacker could have got to the ball before the GK.

Almost poetic, but perhaps you'd like elaborate on what exactly is conditional or costly about a challenge based system?

    JAM ITA penalty mess

What you are saying is "you only deserve fair and just if you can identity obvious errors". I wholeheartedly disagree with this. If three match officials, eleven players, seven substitutes (twelve subs in WC), the manager and the coaching team do not spot a so-called 'obvious error', it cannot...

    JAM ITA penalty mess

If these are the real reasons IFAB decided against a challenge based system, they should have come to me for the answers! Let's dissect their concerns: How would a challenge be indicated? Tell the referee "I'd like a review, please" Would the referee have to stop play immediately? No. Only...

Oh yeah, silly me But the image you posted does show the offside player directly in front of the goalkeeper

I also feel the referee had a much better view (during live play) than all of the camera angles and should have kept this in mind during the VR.

Her hands were down by her side but she deliberately moves herself towards the ball. If it hits her arm, it has to be a penalty. The question is, did it hit her arm? (If it hits her body and then arm, it's not a penalty)

    JAM ITA penalty mess

(Successful challenges should be retained, just like in other sports) Blatantly unfair outcomes would stand in tennis if they wasted all of their challenges (which doesn't happen). I feel that if a team were to waste all of their challenges, the outcome cannot be considered unfair.

World Cup GER NGA - Blindfolded

Didn't notice this angle when watching on the tv - thanks for this. However... Although the offside attacker is not obstructing the GKs vision at the point of contact of the header, the offside attacker did cross the GKs line of sight just before the header. I've been a GK a few times...

World Cup GER NGA - Blindfolded

Sounds like the referee has to judge whether the keeper can make a save which means if it's Karius, offside will never be called; but, if it's De Gea, offside may be called.
