First match abandonment & mass con

That sounds like a great result. My experience was somewhat less reassuring... player threw mud at me from his boot and it struck me in the face. I dismissed and filled out the relevant reports. He pled not guilty to assault but guilty to improper conduct towards a match official and county FA...

    Thoughts?

Alternatively, he sees the challenge coming and has to take evasive action?

Open Age The moaning is putting me off refereeing

As soon as is practicable - preferably as early as possible - call a particularly vocal player over to you. "We've been playing this game for six minutes and all I've heard is you. I'm refereeing this game for another 84 minutes - if you keep moaning then it's either going to be a very long and...

    Thoughts?

Any translation available? My initial reaction is that the striker has had to take evasive action and therefore it's a foul.

    Q4 promotions

Why don’t you ask your RDO ? I can’t see that anyone would be better placed than them to advise

    Pre match chat with teams

Nothing to the teams, to the captains I keep it short such as "you guys are captains for a reason, you know your players better than I do so help me to manage them. We're all here for a game of football so if you want to play, I'll stay out of your way, but if you don't then I've got a job to do."

What's the latest time in a game you've given a card?

90+6 for delaying restart of play. Excluding the post full time dismissals for foul and abusive whenever players have come up after full time…

    Was it DOGSO or not?

Also have to take into account skill level etc but certainly doesn’t appear DOGSO from that location

    Level 4 Observer Reports

That was the issue, I didn’t. Learnt a lot from the game and the observation and looking to try techniques to stop it/prevent it in future

    Level 4 Observer Reports

Well my first observation at level 4 was an assassination! It was my third game but first observation - first two games were closer in terms of competitiveness but this one was just players on at me from the off, surrounding me at each decision (even when it was an obvious decision) so was...

    Watches

I like the sound of that if I ever come away from Apple Watch but are you saying it needs charging each game?

I have RefSix on Apple Watch and then the Spintso Pro. Using both in conjunction with one another without issue

    Broken Corner Flag

Could it? Yes. Should it? Depends on the level, the LOTG supplementary information for match officials states that a game should still start/continue if one or more corner flags are missing unless there are safety issues

Can never think of a come back in the moment

I used to say "well if any of us were any good we'd be doing this at Old Trafford" and it's always diffused the situation and got a smile

Refereeing a Team within your Own Football Club

When I was in sixth form I referred the year 10/11 mixed team and the ‘star’ player was my younger brother. In one of the school cup games I had to give a straight red to him for serious foul play. That didn’t go down too well (years later he accepts it was a red but reckons I caused it by...

    New fitness test

I guess the true evidence of if it is too easy is if there are observer comments over the coming season that referees aren’t fit enough for the games?? If not then perhaps it shows that the test is more suited to refereeing and it opens up the pool of referees that would otherwise have not been...

    New fitness test

Passed this morning, nice weather for it and the track is much easier than on grass. Combined with the adrenaline on the day and running in a group I much prefer it to the Cooper test! Not sure why the sprints are done first though I think they’d be better done afterwards - less chance of injury

    Leisure leagues

Same as above - did it about 10+ years ago for a couple of hours every Sunday night. After I had to send a player off, I was contacted by Leisure Leagues and told I’d be refereeing on the lower ability pitch from then on as the player had made a complaint and he was classed as a paying customer...
