    Done with men’s football

The patronising responses about girl's football are a bit disappointing.

Thoughts on this, causing some debate.

This is one of those tackles that referees know is a foul but most players will think is fine because he got the ball first is ok. I'm not sure a pen would be given in the PL to be honest, and quite possibly the referee will point to the ball to explain his decision, reinforcing the wrong idea.

    Dorking Manager Rant

"They're short of referees," he complains. Why that should be a complete mystery.

    7-6 law test

I'd be slightly wary of this site. Has this ever been the law?

    Playing advantage following SFP

A striker shoots. While the ball is still in play the GK commits a foul on him which is SFP. The ball goes into the goal. Can you play advantage, award the goal, and then dismiss the GK?

Dissent while in the sin bin

There is a distinction between them because a player who is sin binned and then later in the game gets a caution is not dismissed. You and Chas are saying that a player in the sin bin who commits a further act of dissent is shown a second yellow, cannot return, cannot be substituted (ie. is...

Dissent while in the sin bin

Yeah, the question is whether dissent in the sin bin is a yellow card offence or a sin bin offense. The FA guidance says that all dissent must be dealt with by a sin bin except ... and then a list of things which do not include dissent from a player in the sin bin.

Dissent while in the sin bin

I'm sure this has been discussed before but I can't find it, and the FA guidance I can find is a bit ambiguous. Apologies for the repetition. A player in the sin bin commits a further act of dissent. What's the procedure?

    Arsenal vs Tottenham

I can't remember. I was watching as a (very nervous) Arsenal fan rather than as a referee and I was convinced he was getting a caution. I must have thought he was deliberately cutting out a pass (ie. SPA) but I don't remember the incident well enough to describe my thought process at the time...

    Arsenal vs Tottenham

I thought Partey's handball was a caution. The Spurs sub running onto the pitch to get the ball to a team mate quicker was a really obvious caution, Other than that Pawson and his team were spot on I thought.

    Career in refereeing

They're called level 'T' (for 'trainee') now rather than level 8. It's 25 games per level 7->6->5 and only two are observed. Edit: I see you've been correct on this already. Even Rusty's table is wrong, despite being produced by the FA Refereeing dept. There is no Y2->7 promotion scheme.

Changing your mind on card colour

This happened to me on Saturday. Very wet conditions, a lot of sliding tackles, nothing naughty, and a relaxed match. A sliding tackle goes in, one-footed, studs showing, arrives late, some contact, player stays on his feet. The defender apologises immediately. I issue a caution. No...

    Your Thoughts

They're calling him 'sir'. I think there's some sort of power imbalance like maybe he's their teacher. There's absolutely no way I would talk to players like that, even at youth level.

    Six seconds

I've never penalised for this but I have warned keepers, and subsequently start counting out loud, at which point team mates will shout at him to get on with it. If had warned the keeper about 6 seconds and he then takes 14 I would blow. The goalkeeper is a total idiot if he does this after a...

    Arse New

Yes, this. There's absolutely no question that the shirt pulls we are discussing impeded the opponent. Apparently they're not impeding them enough.

    Footwear

Although that looks like an FA document it's actually just for one venue (Stoneham Lane in Hampshire). Some places will not let you on with "Astro" trainers and most won't let you on with screw-in studs regardless of length.

    Arse New

With regard to the shirt pull I think it's a penalty, but I don't think it wasn't given because he missed it. I think it wasn't given because PL referees have been told not to award pens for shirt pulls in the box unless it's ridiculous. Gabriel himself pulled a shirt far more obviously in the...

    Arse New

I thought the ref had a great game. The caution for Joelinton was probably wrong. (And I'm an Arsenal fan.) Great to see a caution for failing to respect the required distance (twice). Very disappointing to hear Gary Neville criticise the decision. Edit: I agree Arteta's behaviour is...

    Arsenal Vs Newcastle

I thought the referee had an excellent game. Gary Neville undermining him in the commentary, displaying his enormous experience of refereeing as usual.
