    Pre-match instructions

This is taken from that thread @one linked above. If someone gave me these instructions, I would have no idea what they want. Can someone clarify? Thank you. Law 9 – Ball in and Out of Play Goal Kicks and Corners: Ensure you're credible on your side. On the far side, let me lead. Monitor the...

Handball after ball hits another body part

I was just looking out of curiosity and saw that it was for 2025/2026. With that said, I couldn't find the new eight second rule for goal keepers in the Simplified Rules. Below is a copy and paste from the pdf of the Simplified Rules. It says 2025/26. What is not a handball offence in...

    Penalty Kick Question

I'm not sure when the match that provided the clip was played or what level. The referee in the match awarded a free kick to the defending team and the youtube short referee used this as an example of an incorrect call and that it should have been a penalty "retake". It obviously confused me...

    Penalty Kick Question

Say the person taking the penalty kick runs right past the ball, then backs up to take it again. You blow the whistle. I would think this is is an illegal feint and YC for the kicker and indirect kick for the defenders, but a referee that I follow on a social media platform gave this example...

    Bristol City offside

At 6:29, the video shows that he was clearly in an offside position when the ball was played. I can see your point about deliberate play, but I would think this is an offense because... challenging an opponent for the ball or clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action...

    Keeper ruling

I'm not sure what he's thinking about the red card but...as someone has quoted, the goalkeeper is in control of the ball WITH THEIR HANDS when throwing it in the air. @edcoach asks...if the goalkeeper tosses the ball out of the 18 yard box, then why isn't that considered controlling the ball...

    Free Kicks (Required Distance Infractions)

These Q&As are from the IFAB "Simplified Laws of the Game" document. Q: An opponent is less than 9.15 m (10 yds) from a free kick when it is taken and interferes with the kick? A: Unless the referee plays the advantage, the kick is retaken and the offending player is shown a yellow card. Q...

Restart After Attacker Kicks Ball Out of Goalkeeper's Hands

Restart After Attacker Kicks Ball Out of Goalkeeper's Hands

Thank you. I definitely understand the restart if there is contact. The confusion I was having was when there isn't contact and let's say not a dangerous play...are we are putting these two statements from the Laws together and using spirit of the law..... from section 12.2 Indirect Free Kick...

Restart After Attacker Kicks Ball Out of Goalkeeper's Hands

What is the restart when a goalkeeper traps the ball with one hand on the ground and an attacker toe pokes it away. It isn't a foul/direct kick offense, right? Is it indirect for playing in a dangerous manner? I think giving a free kick at the spot is worse than the goalkeeper having possession...

    Goalkeeper Releasing the Ball

    Goalkeeper Releasing the Ball

So do I have this right...if a goalkeeper has control but accidentally loses control and immediately scoops it up (as in my original post), don't look for trouble. Let it go. But it's subjective as to if the goalkeeper accidentally lost control because anything deliberate is certainly a release...

    Goalkeeper Releasing the Ball

Just to clarify, my scenarios in my original post describe the goalkeeper handling the ball with no pressure but fumbling the ball and dropping it (not deliberately "electing" to put the ball into ball.) and then handling it again.

    Goalkeeper Releasing the Ball

An indirect free kick is awarded if a goalkeeper, inside their penalty area, commits any of the following offences: touches the ball with the hand/arm after releasing it and before it has touched another player What qualifies as a "release"? Is it deliberate? Imagine any goalkeeper catching a...

    1st game as a AR

So I AR as much as I center referee so I'll list some of the things center referees have asked me to do when I AR and some things that I have asked them. This may be a long list and definitely not discussed at every match, but some things that I remember discussing are below. 1. All balls out...

Player asking if his keeper can pick up the ball from a potential backpass

Similarly, if you were an AR, would you tell a player in an offside position ... "be careful" or something like that?

How do you usually study the LOTG in your country?

I'm a grassroots referee in the US (Washington DC area), so I referee club games between U9 (with my son) and U19. (I say club games because I do not referee High School games. To referee High School games, you need to do a little more training to get certified for that. They have a few...
