    Reffing games involving family

I refereed all 4 of my kids at some point, still do occasionally when they don't get allocated a ref. I have been asked by the home manager on several occasions to ref both when I was the away team's coach and also when watching as a parent. They would rather have a qualified official from the...

Nor v Man City - VAR?

It depends on the pre match instructions given but generally a flag from the assistant at the same time as the whistle from the ref (half a second behind the whistle is close enough) helps sell a decision, or maybe the ref has said that fouls in your area are down to you so they are expecting...

    Uncomfortable game

Most of them I expect ;)

Nor v Man City - VAR?

The AR should be flagging at the same time as the ref is making his no call, at the very latest, it should be as soon as he sees a foul, which then allows the referee the option of blowing or playing advantage. Any AR that flags after the ref has made his decision is asking for trouple.

How long does it take to move up levels?

As I said there is no excuse for not getting promoted due to a lack of assessments. Counties can change the requirement if there aren't enough assessors to go round but surely there needs to be at least two before someone gets promoted. One could be a fluke game, good or bad, but good results...

Lack of Respect for the Game

Dissent for me too - plus it may take a little while before i can get back to check if he has removed/adjusted properly. Shouldn't be a problem after 10 minutes but it still needs to be checked ;)

How long does it take to move up levels?

That should never happen, even if it means an observer being dumped on you at short notice. There is no excuse for having insufficient assessments.

I will have to take a closer look next time then.

    OFFINABUS from player to player...

It is very much down to context. Several players who I built up a great relationship with over the years used to swear at me knowing it wouldn't be a problem. "That was f'ing **** ref" said with a huge smile on the face would just get a response like "About as **** as that pass you just made"...

Nor v Man City - VAR?

Of course he can and we all do at times, but that is still before he makes the decision.

How long does it take to move up levels?

50 games in a season is easy - you can do 4 games a weekend plus midweeks if you want to tire yourself out. My first season I went 7-6, following year 6-4 and then stayed there for several years until I dropped back down. I was too old & unfit to go higher really (they had an age limit back then).

    Derby vs Cardiff

The TV angles aren't clear and neither were the referee's or assistant's angles good enough to see clear enough to give it. Was there contact? yes, looks like their knees clashed Penalty? yes, but I understand why not given.

Have you actually seen a monitor at an EPL game? I haven't

Nor v Man City - VAR?

The referee makes a decision AFTER the AR has given him the info. However the referee makes his decision BEFORE VAR queries it and then has to ignore VAR or change his decison, completely different.

Nor v Man City - VAR?

The assistants are not overruling the referee they give what they see and the referee then chooses whether to go with them, or not. With VAR it would be different. Referee waves play on but VAR then says "You missed a foul there". What choice does the onfield referee have currently? 1) Let the...

Nor v Man City - VAR?

Currently VAR isn't overruling the referee because the only other option is to undermine the referee. The way the PGMOL are using VAR they have to just support the onfield referee's decision if it is subjective, even if there is a clear and obvious error. As soon as VAR overturns an onfield...

    Bad day at the office!

I know that it is quite common to use CARs for in/outs only up north, but I have found that getting them involved more helps. Thanking them for flags etc, all boosts their attitude and normally I find that games go far better when you have CARs helping you. Yes some will cheat, but very few in...

    Bad day at the office!

If you had CARs did they not help with the offside decisions? They may not be correct in all instances but at least they should be in a better poition to call them. Just make sure that you get in a position to check their honesty at least once or twice at each end per half (offensive free-kicks...
