    Sea vs pool

If Mane's not fouled I think there's a likelihood of him gaining control of the ball. I was surprised Tierney didn't produce red straight away as I think everyone was expecting it. I agree the OFR didn't especially show enough but of course we didn't hear what Oliver was saying.

    MU - CP

It seems clear Atkinson/Moss applied the current directive just as Oliver/Tierney did last, and no doubt others will do in the coming weeks.

    Liverpool HB-PK (v Leeds)

This is a good outline of handball - Has quote from Rossetti suggesting the key point is whether the player merely blocks/deflects it onto their hand (offence) or deliberately plays it against their hand (no offence)

    Liverpool HB-PK (v Leeds)

I don't see anything in the LOTG to support the argument that it should be a penalty if it hit the hand directly but not if it gets deflected in that situation. Who knows what IFAB intended although given recent law changes and the fact the Premier League have seemingly been told to fall into...

    Liverpool HB-PK (v Leeds)

A fairly clear cut penalty I think - hand/arm has made the body unnaturally bigger. I think we're going to see more penalties given for handball in PL this season than we've been used to.

    Iceland V England

I agree. He did the U21 Euros final last year from memory and I think he's a very good prospect. The Euros might be too soon for him but I do think we'll see him become a CL regular and go to major tournaments in the future.

    Iceland V England

What's the situation with the first yellow card to the Iceland player? Referee played advantage so should this have still been a yellow card under the new laws?

MLS Disallowed Goal from the PK

Which document on the IFAB website is the above from out of interest? I was trying to find something about a defender encroachment after the Wolves V Sevilla Europa League game. There was a widespread suggestion that the penalty should have been retaken as a Sevilla defender was in the area but...

MLS Disallowed Goal from the PK

Yes. I think the introduction of VAR probably plays a part. I'm not sure there's a demand there for penalties to be regularly retaken because of an encroaching player who had no impact and in any non-VAR game would not have been penalised.

MLS Disallowed Goal from the PK

A quirk of VAR I guess. VAR will only look at the encroachment of a player who directly interferes (or not even that in Orsato/Irrati's case!) If a player encroaches from a penalty and scores and the referee allows the goal but VAR sees that attacker was encroaching as well as a defender then...

MLS Disallowed Goal from the PK

Did the referee spot the encroachement or VAR? If VAR gives it, then I presume it would be a retake if both players encroached - as happened with the Brighton V Leicester James Maddison rebound goal in PL last season.

    Champions League Final

Yes, I'm sure the VAR would have looked at it. The commentators get told if something more extensive is happening but they won't get told every time that VAR looks at a replay. What we can probably say from the lack of an update to the commentators and play not being held up that the VAR...

    City v Lyon

Of course - but my recollection at the time was that both were thinking along similar lines (I think the Neymar goal disallowed in the CL final for accidental handball was cited as an example.) I doubt we'll ever know for certain now and it's so long ago that I doubt too many people really care!

    City v Lyon

It was reported by various people in the media, including Jacqui Oatley, after the Wolves V Man City Willy Boly goal in August 2018 that the PGMO had told them that any goal scored by the hand should be disallowed, even if it was accidental. Here's an example of such a media source - I think...

    City v Lyon

Clearly that's the challenge and I agree it's never going to be 100% but i don't see that as a way some problem do. I think some people take the view that every decision has to have a 100% black and white decision as to what it should have been and VAR has to get everything 100% correct. I...

    City v Lyon

Surely that's pretty much how VAR is meant to work though - it's designed to intervene on the clear cut ones. The borderline ones where people are split should largely be left as if they were a non-VAR game.
  17. O

    City v Lyon

I'm not sure the referee saw the potential foul in real time so not convinced he'd have given it without VAR. If the introduction of VAR has stopped referees from sometimes 'guessing' when giving defensive free-kicks to err on the side of caution then I think that's a good thing in general...

    City v Lyon

I don't see how you can say he's clearly attempted to play the ball - he dummed it! I'm also not sure there was really any impact on the opponents.
  19. O

    City v Lyon

If you're not sure the offside player touched it then VAR shouldn't be giving it - you can't guess it might have just because of the time of the game. I've not seen anything to suggest to me there was a touch.
  20. O

    City v Lyon

I'd put City in a similar bracket to PSG for the last three or four years - clearly a very good team and can produce excellent performances but they seem to struggle in many knockout stage CL games they'd be expected to win on paper and QF seems their current standard. In terms of Makelle, I...
