    7-6 first observation

I've been sent to assess a 7-6 candidate tomorrow - it's his first ever open age game! I did raise this after I spoke to him on the phone, but the reply I got back was "he's applied for promotion - if he's chosen to do it in his first year on open age, that's his decision."

    7-6 first observation

This is great advice. I assessed a young lad 7-6 back in April, who I had previously coached on his first open age middle. Unfortunately, despite me reassuring him before the game, he got himself in a complete state over the fact that he was being assessed, and changed everything about his game...

    7-6 first observation

I've done three or four 7-6 observations in this marking season, Joe. Don't worry - the observer is not there to catch you out, and at this level, it is more coaching than observing. He'll be looking to see that you can apply law correctly (with regards to offside, fouls and misconduct, etc)...

    Pre match advice

And sometimes they'll do that anyway, even if your pre-match instructions expressly state NOT to do it! Caused me no end of problems last Saturday.:mad::mad::mad:

    An anthem for Assistant Refs

What a superb song, and a tragic loss.

    Who played him on Lino?

"the second-last defender, my good sir"

    Sin Bin - Guinea pigs

The whole idea is ridiculous, thank god my supply league didn't go for it. Hopefully it'll be gone within a season.

    Cup Final..

I agree Russell - I think it's handball. His arms are raised in a very unnatural position, and he makes a movement almost like a volleyball shot with his arms. If he'd given handball and a defensive FK, it would have been forgotten 30 seconds later.

    5 Game ban... only!!!

:p:p Do you mean played the man, or played for the man? They're not the same thing you know!

    5 Game ban... only!!!

In the spirit of our cup final offside debate SF, I think that's a great challenge and I've no idea why he's been penalised, let alone sent off. :D:D:D

    Cup Final..

For all we know, he has done the "wait and see", but from his perspective, 60 yards or so away on the line, he may be unsure exactly to what extent he is involved, and so raises the flag.

    Cup Final..

Haha. You're not going to convert me on this one SF. Onside!!

    Cup Final..

Whatever you think about the onside/offside interference argument, it certainly isn't a "terrible flag". The assistant referee sees a player stood in an offside position when the ball is played, and is unsure as to whether the player is active, and therefore raises his flag to indicate the...

    Cup Final..

But as far as the LOTG is concerned, you have to actually play (I.e kick) the ball for that bit to apply. I actually do understand where you're coming from (I'm not being an arse for the sake of it) but I think as far as law is concerned, this is pretty cut and dry.

    Cup Final..

You can't change the law to suit your view. "clearly attempting to play a ball which is close to him when this action impacts on an opponent". He does not clearly attempt to play the ball. "Playing for the ball" isn't a thing. He runs towards the ball, he does not attempt to play it. This...

    Cup Final..

But that bit only applies if he clearly attempts to play the ball, which he doesn't! "Clearly attempting to play a ball which is close to him when this action impacts on an opponent" makes it clear that 'attempting to play the ball' is the bit that activates that part of the law.

    Cup Final..

He doesn't clearly attempt to play the ball though, watch it again. He moves towards it but NEVER attempts to play the ball.

    Cup Final..

Copy of the LOTG (page 77 and 78) 2. Offside offence A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by: - interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or -...

    Level 4 promotions

Blimey Brian, give him a break! I played university football as a level 4 last season (for the 3rd team, I'm useless!!) and see no reason why I couldn't do that and still manage to "take my refereeing seriously". I played BUCS on Wednesday afternoons, and refereed on Saturdays and midweek...
