Out of courtesy I contact my assistants on a Tuesday night for a Saturday KO. This is usually ahead of the club notification.
As an assistant I get nervous if I haven't heard from the ref by Thursday night. That is despite club and fa full time confirmations.
Oh, I was 40 when I started.
The top table is beyond me but I will be happy with a few years as a 4 with maybe a chance as a 3. But I am under no illusions about the size of the task ahead or the standard of competition I will face
Took up the whistle 7 years ago following a long playing career in and around the levels I am about to officiate. Messed about for first 3 years thinking I was still a player who referees. Last 3 seasons have been fantastic with year on year promotions since the penny dropped. I am a referee who...
Ejected 2 players in first 5 minutes of an OA game for similar thing, the only difference being they both had their hands round each other's necks.
For the rest of the game both teams suggested I had ruined the game
You can not win sometimes
Hi, the promotion season runs 1 March to 28 February
You will be required to referee 20 games. The games need to be 11v11. You will be assessed at least 3 times to make sure you hit the required standards. The competencies you need to show are published- a google search will sort this.
Theses...
Be careful how you use the word employed- we are most certainly not. Employment brings with it employee rights and duties on the FA.
We are appointed to games to referee them in accordance with the laws and competition rules. The FA don't pay us.
I have yet to walk off a pitch but would have...
We all have those days
Refereed some veterans the other day on an anniversary of a particularly painful event. Shouldn't have taken the appointment, my mind was elsewhere. Everything the players did and said annoyed me. Considered jacking it after about 5 minutes, it was going to be one of...
Difficult to know what was said over the comms, though he didn't give himself any thinking space.
In my opinion he should have backed away towards the corner flag beckoning the offending player to come with him. It would have bought him some time to weigh up what he actually saw, take in...
The steppes approach we have been taught in our county is taken from the FA Respect release (bottom page19);

I might get shot down here, but by this stage I wouldn't have involved the captain at all. His part is much earlier on, before the first caution.
Bringing the captain in when you did could be misconstrued. A very public boll&?king and last warning might have served you better.
But at the end...
Padfoot calm yourself down, don't go insulting posters for simply chewing the fat.
Talking about changes that might make our lives easier does not equal abandoning the laws or pandering to anyone. I don't believe the handball law will change, but it's fun to work out how it could. Did you never...
I think an indirect free kick anywhere on the pitch if the referee deems it accidental and it results in a clear advantage to the offending player/team.
if a player is waving his hands around then any contact would be difficult to see as anything other than deliberate.
At the vets game I...
On the supply league I officiate on the observer is listed as the fourth official- no questions about entry costs or the club being aware they are there.
On the county and district I have always made contact with my observer/assessor well before the game. Some want to hear your pre match, some...
There is a little unfairness about to be fair!
I haven't officiated on the local district leagues for at least a year whilst I chase the glory of promotion. It does then seem a little galling that I get offered one of the cup finals. I was unable to pick it up because of county commitments but...
