    Leaving the field of play

Had an interesting one today! Half way through second half, CAR frantically waves me over at a stoppage. Says opposing winger on GKs and FKs is purposely going 1-2 yards off the pitch, to create a better angle to run onto the ball. It actually made me think I didn’t know the sanction, if any, if...

    Potential kit clash - advice

A bit of sensible thinking would be nice wouldn't it! I was told by an FA a while back (I've moved since) that if a team kit clashed with the referee, I had to abandon the game. I said I was very happy to wear a training bib / coloured top if a teams dark blue looked too much like black, but...

    Going for promotion- anytips

And if they change (which happens often as they're normally substitutes) remember to brief the new CAR on what you expect from them, no matter how many times they change the person.

    Potential kit clash - advice

It does, but away team second kit is even more of a clash, as it's all blue!

    Potential kit clash - advice

So my two teams for Saturday are bouncing emails back and forth about a kit clash. Home team is blue and white stripes (Sheff Wed), away team is black and white stripes (Juve). I've already said I think this is going to be a clash and one team needs to change to a second kit, but they're both...

    The Stepped Approach

I certainly don't use a stepped approach, but depending on what they say, players might get one warning first, but that would be it. I sin binned a player about 30 seconds after he came on for dissent, as it was fully warranted. Dissent (and not OFFINBUS) is about managing the game for me, if I...

    Stats

It's certainly easier to hit 12km if you start recording distance when you pull up in the car until you leave...unless you're also doubling as a ball boy.

    Stats

I do actually find on occasions it's less hectic at the higher levels and maybe that gives the impression it's less distance (for those not tracking?). Sunday league, it just gets humped from one end to the other. So at times all I seem to be doing is sprinting up and down the pitch, then...

    Failing to Respect the Distance

That's why I very specifically said "retreating" not talking about players moving into the way of the free kick

    Failing to Respect the Distance

I actually hate this, I get players should move away and not delay, but so many instances of players deliberately kicking it at retreating players to try and get them cautioned. In that instance I'd be more inclined to caution the kicker and not the retreating defender.

    Cautions

I reckon if he did get a red, it would be the first and only time he spoke like that to a ref!! Personally I wouldn't send someone off for saying that to me (I only do adult football), but if someone else did, I wouldn't have an issue with it at all and would understand why.

Some talking points from my game on Saturday

I agree with this. I'm probably one of the most relaxed and tolerant when it comes to language and abuse, but directly calling you a name using profanity is 100% a sin bin as a minimum. This can actually be worse than not saying anything! It's good to communicate with players and not treat them...

Extra time & pens following me around

Can we swap games?! I've never had penalties! I keep hoping my cup games will go to penalties, but no luck. Yesterday, 1-1 and it's looking like nobody is going to score. It's no ET and straight to penalties, I'm starting to get excited. 15 mins to go, keeper drops an absolute howler and it ends 2-1

    Alternative Handball Wording

As I said....I seriously doubt that is going to cause issues down the pyramid. And more issues than the current law?!

    Alternative Handball Wording

You honestly think players are good enough to target hitting the ball at someone's hand / arm?! Perhaps if they're only a few feet away and at the highest level, but more than a few feet and below the PL, then it would be totally redundant to try and hit someone's arm / hand. My team is in L2...

    Reds, v Cityzens

How many real howlers, real howlers, where there a season? 5 or 6 max? That's what VAR should be for and given the infrequency, you can argue if that that even has merit is another debate. How many times did AR make a clear mistake on offside? I thought most offside calls at the highest level...

    Alternative Handball Wording

How about: "It is an offence if a player touches the ball with their hand / arm" Nice and simple :) I personally am not a fan of the defender and attacker being punished differently. I get why the law was introduced, as it is utter chaos when an attacker scores from an accidental handball and...

Question on GK Picking up the Ball

As everyone has pointed out, this really is a case of interpretation of law and it's not clear. I think classifying this as DOGSO would be extremely harsh and unfair. Given the OP, seems like the keeper could've easily allowed the ball to come into the area and picked it up normally, would've...

    2 Red Cards (Spitting)

Looks like you referee in the same league I do, as we had a spitting incident at the weekend....unless this happened in more than one league. Possible I guess. Really sucks that's happened to you, it's awful and I'm sorry that's happened. We also had an attempted headbutt on a referee as well...

    County Cup

As well as being more prepared yourself, you should also expect the clubs to be better prepared as well. Team sheets, match balls, etc 5 mins before KO might be overlooked at park level, but at county level, teams should be expected to also abide by competition rules! So team sheets in on time...
