    Equipment

Pockets that close. I have velcro. When your coins, pens, cards, paper fly out of your pocket during the game... I have a backup whistle in case the good one breaks. Safety pins. I have a few attached to my bag. The first time my elastic band snapped on my shorts...let's just say the delay...

First Open Age Game this weekend - what's your #1 piece of advice?

Two things. The first call needs to be right and with confidence. Breathe, take the moment, and make the call. At the beginning of the second half, the first ball out of play, name the team before making the signal. Sometimes we all laugh when we signal, name the team, and realize our hand...

    Assistant Referee Feedback

Thoughts... In my training, I was taught that correct calls are wanted and the first call is the most important. As an AR, I've been told by centers that all fouls are theirs. It is what it is. For me, I tell my ARs, you're licensed and earned your place. I trust you to assist. Call it...

    Seen on Twitter…

Watched this highlight reel of the match. I am amazed that ball actually was out of play. That was a quick flag and whistle. The immediate pass even with the whistle just before the card seems harsh. Highlight reels do not normally provide background. As a ref, I'll say, I wasn't on the...

    photos

I got lucky. I did a game a couple months ago and the club put several games up on the internet. I got to see myself running the line as the AR. Unfortunately, the defenders kept dropping. I saw myself only when there were scoring chances.

    Euro 2020 final

True about american football, but my son is looking at rugby and a horse collar tackle is considered very dangerous. (Edit: to be clear, it's the tackle going high. Most grabbing of the shirt is legal in rugby. He's just learning the game, but it's really not the grab, but the direction of the...

    Japan v Matildas

I agree some would not be red, but I noticed the vid didnt show the red given on each play. The ones I saw red looked like Dogso.

    New Ref Bag

I had my flag handles damaged my first year because they stuck out of my bag. Switched to a longer bag.

    Euro 2020 final

For the horse collar, I would have gone VC. A shirt pull vs a collar pull changed where the force was applied...i.e. the neck. Pulling the hair tackle is what I see more of in women's soccer.

Allowing too much and calling to much

That's what was bugging me. I found both teams willing to play this way for the whole game. When I get brute vs finesse, it's a whole different game. But, I had two brute teams. Honestly, I could have switched players on the field and it would look the same. I took notes about the game...

    What's a "trick"?

I am in the US and part of a class I attended, the instructor showed different clips of the trick. Most of the tricks consisted of the defender not being under pressure or the opponent was simply nearby and there really wasn't a need and it was all for show. What changed it in the alternative...

    New Ref Bag

What is the long dimension of the center compartment? I've looked at different bags and I like to carry my flags in my bag. Looking at the bag, my first thought was that it looked longer than my own. But, then I noticed the two side compartments. So, what is the real middle length? I use...

Law 3.7 - Extra Players on the FOP

4.YC for entering without permission and YC for SPA, so RC? I agree. I was taught the mechanics is to show the YC, identify conduct as a means to separate it from the 2nd yellow, flash the 2nd YC, followed by the RC due to 2YC, and then identify conduct. Not a straight red.

    Threshold for Dissent

My league rules require a straight red for two words. The "F" word and the "N" word. The first came about as it created fistfights and its implementation has curbed it. The N starts fights with African Americans and is highly offensive here. Otherwise, its how its used. For Dissent, I was...

    Was refereeing kids football

I has a coach with players standing at the halfline for subs. Our league rules were subs on your own throw-ins. So at least ten minutes passed and every throw in was their opponent's. Finally, frustrated, the coach yelled when was his team getting a throw in? I told him when his team stops...

Allowing too much and calling to much

I think that's where I went...allowing more than the level of play. I was doing 18 year old state championship games and got assigned a bunch of 13 and 14 competitive games and didnt change my level. Thinking back, I realize I didn't change. With 18s, they'd pass sooner or too strong and...

How to improve as a referee

I've asked to attend classes not at my level...even as just an observer. Sometimes allowed, sometimes not. Every class adds to knowledge. I've even found a mentor this way. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Allowing too much and calling to much

Greetings. I am a US Soccer Ref, usually 13 to 19 year old competitive and school competition. I started in 2013 and I've gone from calling everything by the book to allowing more challenges. I've watched higher level play and seen the 'letting them play through it'. This is what I believe...
