    Working with other match officials

Hi all Does anyone have any tips for being appointed as an assistant referee for a referee that you know is particularly challenging to work with or you know is not up to the competency level of that particular fixture and therefore is going to cause yourself management issues? Thank you

    8 second law example

By that same token - surely if a player is preventing the release of the ball from the goalkeeper, this then comes into law 12 and an indirect free kick is awarded - therefore the 8 second count does not begin.

    8 second law example

I have read the thread. You are correct the law does have a specific definition. It also states ‘the referee will decide when the goalkeeper has control of the ball’.

    8 second law example

Some laws are black and white some aren’t. Offside is black and white, you’re either offside or you’re not. This very law states that it is the referees interpretation as to when the goalkeeper is in control of the ball. It may be inconsistent across games, lots of laws are but for me as long...

    8 second law example

I don’t see the problem with applying this law using common sense. A bit of communication wouldn’t go a miss either. I had a keeper yesterday who said look I can’t release there is a striker there and I simple shouted so that everyone could hear, I am not able to start the timer striker until...

    Spectator

The audacity as well. Making out he was coming on because it was so serious but still in that moment of so called need to use it to have a pop. The fact he told me I’m coming on like it or not, tells me he knew it was wrong.

    Spectator

Hi I kind of know the answer to this question but wanted to know what others would do differently. Step 7 game. Goalkeeper goes down injured badly clutching knee. I run over. Next thing, spectator comes running on to the pitch - ‘I don’t care what you say ref I’m coming on that’s my son’...

    Captain's Only

League have now sent out updated guidance to say that FA have mandated this across all competitions so they will have to adopt it this season.

    Tight calf muscles - help!

This is key in my opinion. You can do all the stretches in the world but if you don’t identify and solve the problem it is just going to keep reoccurring. (Stretching may be solving the issue if it’s a tight muscle problem).

    Captain's Only

Precise reason the league gave for not adopting it… It was announced after their AGM and therefore not adopted as part of their rules.

    Captain's Only

Not disputing that. I am raising the fact that this has clearly not been communicated very well which, quite frankly is poor. Ultimately, as an L5, I have got to go and referee in Saturday potentially unclear on one of the laws - this does not help with people’s confidence in referees.

    Captain's Only

Our Step 7 feeder league has already met with the whole referee panel and the clubs from all divisions and explicitly stated that they will not be enforcing this rule but are ‘encouraging clubs to use it’. It’s caused a lot of confusion already and will cause even more so if it is going to be...

Stéphanie Frappart - Eng vs Spain

I think Frappart has had a fantastic game so far. There have been a few occasions where she has accidentally had her back to play during incidents. Shows how incredibly hard it is even as an elite official to get in the correct positions.

    Tight calf muscles - help!

I struggled with this massively. I brought some heel raise insoles for my boots (Achilles tendinitis soles) and the problem was solved almost instantly. I do recommend physio but you need to find a good one. If they don’t identify the problem stretches that they prescribe for you is not going to...

    Como Vs Inter

I’m selling a yellow card on a Sunday for me. However if you pause video at point of contact I’m sure he would have gone on and rolled it into the net, it happens so quickly in real time.

    Cup final errors

I never said they were the same. Yes the VAR red or yellow aspect was subjective but the on field decision part was not subjective it was a missed handball, therefore an error.

    Cup final errors

In a cup final recently, I sent off a goalkeeper from an offside indirect free kick restart for delaying the restart of play (second yellow) and restarted with an indirect free kick to the other team. (I now know this was completely incorrect). Luckily it had little impact. With the recent no...

    Promotion L7-6

Ask your RDO. In my experience some do some don’t. I believe you can roll them on. For me.. I hadn’t even completed the expected amount of games by the time I revived my promotion, I had 2 that I was going to ref in the coming weeks that I submitted as part of my evidence, and I got my promotion.

    Junior/Youth 2 Finals, 1 day

Congrats on your appointments! I was a 4th last week. There is a huge amount of information that you can find on how to be a 4th. Here is a good video: To summarise: -support the referee and ARs in their duties -manage substitutions in the way an AR would -help to explain decisions to the...

    Adopting aggressive attitude

Understood and that’s what I thought. I did, having dealt with the goalkeeper first, then publicly call the other offender to warn him that his conduct was not acceptable, I should have cautioned him. The players understood - I feel like everyone was obviously focussing on the kick as some...
