    Wolves vs City

The fact that an offside offense cannot be considered until Stones contacts the ball makes this a legal goal for me. By the time Stones heads the ball, Silva is not interfering with Sa’s ability to make the save. If this was a cross in the run of play, we may have a different discussion.

    Boots.... again

I’m wearing a different type of shoe called an Under Armour Yard Turf. These are designed for baseball players on turf, but they are actually like running shoes with a turf sole. I wear these in the middle on 4G (we are allowed in the US) and on hard natural surfaces. They have very good...

    What flag signal to make.

Timely topic, as my crew had this exact same situation happen in a game on Sunday. Attack is going toward AR1's goal (I'm AR2). Attackers have a corner kick, the ball pinballs around, and the ball crosses the line in the air under the crossbar as the keeper makes a desperate attempt to claw the...

    Hungary v Netherlands double touch

I'll nominate American football as being even worse than football/soccer in this regards. The only saving grace for us in the US is that there are a couple of rules experts that actually know what they are talking about.

    Sept 27-28 Premier League discussion

I know you and I have had this online discussion elsewhere, so we're kind of filling others in here. I agree with you. In my opinion, this was one of those "it could be or couldn't be" types of DOGSOs where the intentional/cynical nature of the foul could swing things more toward a DOGSO red...

Steve Cooper not happy with referee again

Steve needs to worry about his own team. They are not good, and they are boring to watch.

    Sept 27-28 Premier League discussion

That’s fair. I do think many officials subscribe to the idea that if there’s doubt, go yellow. This is one of those situations where I know we don’t have “intentional foul” as one of the four considerations, but if we did this foul would have checked that box. It was a clear “uh-oh, I’m beat...

    Sept 27-28 Premier League discussion

First of all, Chelsea-Brighton is bonkers. Both teams with high lines. If you like attack, this is fun. If you like good defending, probably not the game for you. :) Robert Sanchez on quite the walkabout today (I think I have the English slang correct for what he's doing or not doing). For me...

    Newcastle - City

I'll grant you that the fall was dramatic, but every replay I saw did show contact. To be completely honest (and I'm not a Newcastle fan or a City detractor), this is one where I felt video replay "confirmed" the decision (i.e. the video showed with a high degree of certainty that the onfield...

    Man City v Arsenal

As an admitted Michael Oliver fan, I did not think this was one of his better performances. Even discounting the Trossard second yellow controversy (by now, players should realize they are playing with fire messing with the ball, but I won't really comment on that as plenty of others have) and...

LEE v BUR penalty not given

My take after watching a few times and seeing the stills-in real time, I’d see myself giving a foul/penalty as I generally am strict on tackles from behind. In other words, unless I’m 100% sure ball was played and the attacker fell over the leg that plays the ball, I’m giving the foul. However...

    Sept 14-15 Premier League discussions

I'll start off with a positive item - Atwell with a good on-field send-off for SFP on Stephens in the SOU-MU game. That is the type of call that, unfortunately, I think we see defaulted to an on-field caution with VAR recommending a review to upgrade in a lot of games where VAR is available...

    NEW V TOT

Regarding the first quote, to be totally fair when was the last time Darren Bond ran a line for a game? I can't imagine he was totally comfortable on the line. For the second quote, is it possible that Hussin knew he was done and that any sort of attempts at treatment would be fruitless? While...

    Forest v Wolves

I’m still trying to find the clause in the Laws where “gaining an advantage” is a consideration for handling. The only part of the Laws that comes close to that is the language around scoring a goal via the hand/arm or immediately after.

    Welch Retires

Very good referee in the matches I watched her work. I’m surprised that she made the move into management now. She’s “only” 40, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think she still had another couple of years at the EFL/Premier League level and 3-5 years at the upper levels of the women’s game.

    Premier League Matchweek 1 discussion

Thought Rob Jones was very good in the Manchester United-Fulham opener. Good spot on the Maguire dive, had a good foul bar, was consistent, and strong fitness. I thought he moved well late in a game that stretched. Hope the rest of the weekend goes as well for the third team!

    EURO 2024 Final - Spain V England

Don't tell that to Mexico's Cesar Ramos. He was the center referee for the Colombia-Uruguay Copa America semi last week. There was a Colombia player down, and he ran 50 yards behind the play to check on him. He took one look, pretty much just said "eh, nothing to see here", and started the game...

    EURO 2024 Final - Spain V England

Kind of surprised to see the negative reactions about the Sonic Blast. I started using it last fall and really like it - particularly when I'm working in larger "stadiums" (for perspective, these are usually fields also used for high school or college American football that have 1,000 to 3,000...

    EURO 2024 Final - Spain V England

Bjorn Kuipers had the Euro 2020 final, which was his final UEFA/international match. Happy to see UEFA entrust the final to some new blood who has by all accounts been a rising star for some time now. Big challenge for sure, but I think Letexier is up for it.

    Euros 2024

It's just too hard for those looking for anything to fit their own narrative that (English) refs suck to realize that the issues at WC18 were all because of Mark Clattenburg's decision to leave PGMOL/English refereeing to take the Saudi Arabia job. As we know here, at that level it's not like...
