Then he will not be there long (although with the FA's record of turnover, he might be there for another 30 years), and somebody who can adapt will take his place.

I am not a fan of the challenge system at all, but I tend to agree with UEFA's system of referee-led checks. The referee should, in all circumstances, be the final arbiter and I think that's where the Premier League gets it horribly wrong. They need to go to the screen and make a final decision...

    Canny Refereeing

Honestly, even if he already has Blue 4 and Red 10, he will be thankful for the confirmation and if you have nothing else, and he has nothing else, then he will be glad to know he didn't miss anything glaring.

    Offside After A Save

You are correct, this is offside. The defender on the goalline made a save; the other defender did not play the ball, but it did rebound off of him. Neither of these incidents resets the offside consideration and the attacker is offside.

These people are exceptional individuals and professionals. I expect them to be able to adjust quickly (though I still understand there will be hiccups) and I don't think this is as great a problem as you're making it out to be.

I don't know about you, but I was not trained to think this way. My decision is always final, sure, but I can still be wrong.

    Junior/Youth Should I book manager

Yeah, I should have said "persistent comments" rather than "persistent dissent."

Yeah, I tend to agree. If it takes more than 10 seconds to check something, is it really a clear and obvious error?

Goalkeeper throws ball at oppositon player.

Yes, it is supposed to be "sending off." This is what happens when you try to spam out messages while at work 🤣

My inference was based on your objection to the "tame journalist to add 'balance'" comment.

Players making abusive comments towards opponents

That's what I was going to say.

    Report or not?

It's no use reporting it now, since you didn't take the action that you ought to have taken at the time. It is a sending-off offense for a manager to enter the field of play to remonstrate with the referee. He should have been shown the card at this point and the appropriate report made.

    Senior AR

I would not advise telling the coach to speak to the referee after the game. Remember, it is a sending off offense for coaches to enter the FOP to remonstrate with the referee, even at half time and full time. Otherwise, you're saying the right things. Be honest, be polite, be firm.

Goalkeeper throws ball at oppositon player.

I've had a similar thing in a match before. I gave the foul against the defender for the collision and sent the GK off for violence conduct. The decision was not contested. Had it been contested, the answer is that there was a foul which occurred before the misconduct which is what the free kick...

How best to handle a niggly match?

This is pretty much the only answer to this question. Sometimes, the players just don't want to play football and there's not much you can do to make them. You get through it, do your best, and move on quickly. Not every match is a learning opportunity--some are just a game of survival.

I’m too lenient and it backfired today

And, at the very least, had you cautioned then you could say that you did all that was reasonable to avoid the increase in temperature and the players just didn't want to play along. I have found that I have never bottled a call and had a positive impact on match control; I have had many bottle...

Yes: back when they were the rest of us. Their having learned from their mistakes is what made them great.

    Whistles

I got mine from heyref.ca (a Canadian company) but that was a long time ago when you could hardly find them. I also didn't pay for it as I was gifted a certificate and used it to buy that a few other things. Is it worth the money? Probably, but a Fox 40 will do the trick for almost every thing.

    Mouthy Parents

Have you ever heard NHL refs talk to players? It's absolutely nuts. I've been close. One time said "For f**k's sake, John, you've done nothing but b***h all game. Are you going to play at all?" It wasn't taken too well.

    Whistles

I use the Valkeen and it is top notch. In the rare incident that I use a different whistle, I use a Fox 40 Classic.
