    Junior/Youth Advice please

Unfortunately in my experience this tends to be down to the manager - some I have had this season have been really good, so their team are respectful as well. However, some managers have not been so good, and as a result their team tend to try it on more. My last U12 game before Christmas was a...

You're right, the correct restart would be an indirect free kick: according to Law 12 "An indirect free kick is also awarded to the opposing team if, in the opinion of the referee, a player commits any other offence, not previously mentioned in Law 12, for which play is stopped to caution or...

    First 3G game yesterday

I do a lot of 6-a-side on 3G pitches and it does take it out of your joints and back. The under-surface is really compacted hard, so it's like running hard on concrete with bubble wrap on top. The surface means you don't realise how hard it is until later when you start to suffer. Part of...

From post 9 from the OP I assume the GK rolled it with his foot ie kicked it. ( "There was no way he was actually testing the ball, he knew exactly what he was doing which was to "trick" the goal keeper into passing him the ball.") It therefore is in play. Even if not, the player is trying it on...

;) As Cheshire Ref (the OP) says in post 9 the forward tricked the gk into passing him the ball, ie he took the kick as required in Law, meaning that it actually was in play. If he had not penalised the player and the ball had gone into the goal then he would have had to allow it. (Unless he...

    First 5 to 4 Assessment....

Not the biggest pitch around and the ball was a yard over half way. Most of the players were on the edge of the PA and he over-hit it. By the time it reached the goal line it wasn't going fast so the GK could have easily caught it, but I don't think he wanted to concede again(!) so instead of...

    First 5 to 4 Assessment....

Quite, although I will sometimes tell them a kick's indirect if it's not obvious what it's been given for, even though I'm already standing with my arm up. I'd never say that a kick's direct - there's no point. However, 2 weeks ago I awarded an ifk just outside the area and shouted "indirect...

I read it as the ball had left the area so was in play and the player was therefore trying to score a goal by unfair means. By saying "Let me just check that keeper I think its flat" he's going beyond just asking the GK for the ball. Similar to saying "leave it!" when standing behind an opponent...

I agree. Total naivety from the goalkeeper but allowing the goal if the ball had gone in - which if I read the OP right was the intention - would have caused mayhem and probably resulted in at least one red card for the GK and probably several more as other players became involved.

Australian A-League - kit clash, ref overruled

We've got a similar case going on at the moment in our sunday league. One of my colleagues on the next pitch to mine arrived to find his teams warming up, home team in all-black with a 3 inch wide pink stripe on the front of their shirts and away team in all-black with blue collar and cuffs on...

    Offinabus

Both cards were spot on. You warned the players before the game and then used the step approach, culminating in the first yellow for showing dissent. The second player would have got the same treatment but unfortunately he doesn't understand that you're not his mate and therefore calling you a...

    Resigning from refereeing

I'm sorry to hear about your incident. Unfortunately my experience with CFAs at hearings is that they are pretty hopeless. My first hearing was for a player I dismissed for an attempted head butt. At the hearing the club manager told the player to state that he was trying to kiss the player...

    General bad language

That's the first time I've ever been accused of that! Usually teams ask not to have me any more because they think I'm too strict! I must let them know that there's someone even stricter! As Alex says, I consider unacceptable language - which does not necessarily mean foul language, but also is...

    General bad language

About 15 or so years ago my supply league had a no foul language policy. We were told that all foul language must be sanctioned as OFFINABUS, whatever the circumstances. If we heard it, the player had to go, no excuses and anyone who did not would be marked down by the assessor. We had players...

The Referee ('s wife) strikes back!

I just remembered a story a friend told me a few years ago about a match he'd had the day before. Although he is 100% white Anglo-Saxon, he doesn't look it. His skin tone and facial hair make him look middle eastern, and that together with the fact that he appears to go all out to make himself...

Junior/Youth Not had a good game today

As the Capn says, the most important thing is to identify the original offender. If the players know straight away that you're going to deal with the offence then this can help calm the situation down, and may stop it escalating in the first place, making it less likely that you lose him. I...

    What Constitutes A "Foul Throw?"

The ball must come into the FOP from the point where it left, so as long as he throws it back in so that it enters the FOP at the same point that it left then it does not matter how far back he stands. All the Law says is that both feet must be touching the ground, on or behind the line. It does...

Can your assistants not destroy our pitch please?

I also ran one half on each wing - again both as badly as each other: they asked for consistency so I gave it to them! I used to run a lot of youth games and found that when parents of each team were on opposite sides this meant that the club lino wasn't getting grief from the opposing team's...

    Hector Moreno tackle

I agree. I don't think that a challenge where sufficient force is used to break a leg can be considered reckless. It may be accidental and a serious injury results, in which case there is no offense committed. However, in my opinion if there is a card used it has to be red. That is equally true...

Open Age Name & Shame The Bad Players/Teams

Unfortunately it's not quite as simple as telling people how teams usually behave themselves. My local sunday league publishes a Respect League. This shows all the teams in the league, together with all cautions and whether for dissent or otherwise and red cards for OFFINABUS or otherwise. Club...
