    Referee mic being recorded

Why can't it be recorded for FA use? Top level referees shouldn't have anything to hide. It would certainly stop players ranting at refs, and that would filter down to non-league soon enough so I'm all for it!

    Sundays Games

When I said sarcasm, I meant ME using it! Obviously you have to pick and choose the moment carefully, but well executed and it can work wonders!

    Sundays Games

I completely disagree with ANY referee using foul abusive or insulting language. If we have the power to send off players/officials for using it, then we shouldn't use it. Now sarcasm, that's a different thing altogether....

    Junior/Youth being called a cheat.

It's so hard to differentiate between yellow card dissent and red card abuse just from the words said, you have to take into consideration a load more other factors eg what's happened up to that point in the game (other cards, dissent, style of match), who said it (what's he been like to you up...

Well said. Your appearance upon arrival at a game is very important as first impressions go a long way. Every time you meet someone for the first time that happens, so make sure your kit is clean and smart (especially boots!) and act as though you are the kind of referee whose performance...

Basic Steps to cautioning a player??

I'd say "thanks no4, you can go now" and then in a lower tone to the captain "if you're not going to help me with your teammates by setting the example, then I'll treat you like any other player and any privileges you may have had as a captain have just gone. OK?" and then send him on his way by...

    Hail

Did anyone experience severe weather this weekend? I was running the line on Saturday afternoon and had to put my spare hand and arm over my head at one point to protect it from some rather sharp hailstones. The ref finally stopped the play about 10 seconds later and we all dashed for cover - I...

    Assistant referee etiquette

Just pulling your leg Gaz, couldn't help myself! I hope it goes great tomorrow. Remember, you're a ref assisting the guy in the middle, not a club lino or a timekeeper for the crowd (!) And don't turn around, keep facing the FOP. And NEVER fetch the ball for a player (unless it's right by you...

Getting back into refereeing - staffordshire/west mids

Tim, I was a Class 1 ref back in the 90's and I packed up in '99 due to work/home pressure. In 2004 I decided I wanted to come back, got in touch with Birmingham CFA and Dave Shelton said if I'd called him 6 months earlier I could have been accepted back as a Level 7 (the old Class 3) but as it...

    Badges

I spend the time sowing on the velcro (the soft part on the shirt, the spiky part on the badge). You always have to wear a badge, but that's not too much of a hardship, and at least when you have an FA appointment you can wear your County badge with no problem. Having said that, my FA badge...

    Open Age Half time subs

I always ask the skippers before kicking off the second half if there are any changes, as part of my counting the players again. Good habits to get into!

    AR calls

If they're neutral assistants, bring it into your teamtalk about helping you with fouls and communication between you and them. If they're club AR's DON'T LET THEM FLAG FOR FOULS!

now a level 7 ref.. where do i go now? advice please

Completely agree with Dan. I used to have an issue in the first few minutes of the second half, especially free kicks where the players involved were standing the same way around as the first half. I overcame this by explaining the foul and saying who'd fouled who, so that the players knew whose...

    GK Handles ball Outside PA

It's the same if the GK brings down the opponent with his hands, or pulls him back, or pushes him over. All DFKs outside the PA, all penalties inside the PA, and at least a caution, possibly DOGSO if the opponent could've scored.

    Friendlies

I did 2 games in a day on Saturday for the first time in over 20 years! Coventry City U18 v Brentford, followed by Coventry Sphinx v Leamington. I was worried about the ankles, but they held up well. However I completely forgot about the pate! Just starting to peel now....

    Tying laces, do you wait?

It also depends greatly upon the rapport you have with that player, and if you're going to be nice to them (or not!)
