    Palace V Liverpool

Possibly in real time (we've all given those) but with the benefit of replays/VAR I can't see any justification for a penalty here.

"But I got the ball Ref!"

"I got the ball" isn't as bad as "I was going for the ball". Maybe you were but you didn't get anywhere near it!

    ‘Only asking a question’

When someone says the are 'only' asking a question it is rare that they are 'only' asking the question.

    Coping with getting it wrong

I'd take the extra time just for the feeling of making a 'controversial' decision in the smug knowledge that I was 100% right!

    Coping with getting it wrong

I waited 17 years for this scenario to occur. Players from both sides were surprised when I disallowed the goal but at 4-0 with less than 10 minutes to play there were no arguments. How I wish it could have happened at 0-0 in the last minute of a cup final!!

How was everyone’s first game back

First game back this past Saturday. Following Christmas/New Year break, weather and COVID postponements this was the first game I (and both teams) had in 6-7 weeks. Awarded an early penalty to the home team when the goalkeeper cleaned out an attacker. Lots of arguments that he got the ball...

Changing my mind based on players reactions

Not something I'm keen on either - just end up getting flack for 2 dodgy decisions. Still, sometimes self preservation takes over!

Open Age A slight phantom goal issue

Just bear in mind that at 5-1 up with 5 minutes to go there might not necessarily be much celebration. Also, don't let the losing teams complaints cloud your judgement. You gave what you thought at the time was correct (it may well have been) but there is some good advice here on how you might...

Referee Award at the Ballon D'Or?

I don't know about Ballon d'Or level but some of the leagues and associations in my area hand out a local referee of the year award. The winner is usually someone considered a safe choice rather than a referee who controversially, but correctly, might have sent off 3 players and disallowed 2...

Changing my mind based on players reactions

As halter42 says, changing your mind is never easy even is the final decision turns out to be the correct one. Luckily I've never had a serious incident but definitely a few throw ins where I've signalled one way only for the opposite team to collect the ball without argument. A few years ago a...

    Retirement age?

My understanding is that the age limits were scrapped a number of years ago. I believe this was largely to comply with employment law as you say. In theory you can continue as long as you want provided you're up to the job.

    IFAB q&a

The answer is probably technically correct but in my games if the thrower accidentally slips the ball I'll allow a retake.

    Am I going crazy?

Like br_pockets says, the situation you describe is a pretty regular occurrence at all levels of football. Even at U12 I'd expect players to know that isn't offside and certainly the manager should know better.

Treating players of a different abilty the same

What if you had to make that decision in the first minute? Or the last minute where the quick one had run out of steam?

Treating players of a different abilty the same

As you describe it both are DOGSO and red cards. I don't think referees should be making decisions on our perception of whether one player is better than another. Would you consider the ability of the goalkeeper when making a DOGSO decision?

    Absolutely.

    Injury Time in Junior Football

I referee junior football, mostly older age groups but occasionally down to U13s. Added time is the norm and very much expected.

    Incident during goal scoring opportunity

I agree, as described I think you took the correct action.
