Inspired by the Brentford thread
A holding offence starts outside the penalty area it would be DOGSO if play is stopped for a free kick, by the time they're inside the area the holding is continuing but it's no longer DOGSO.
Perhaps due to the hold delaying them sufficiently, or a heavy touch...
Disagree with this. This law is very simple and easy to enforce, astonished the officials in this game got it wrong.
The Comms will be interesting!
I'm not even sure it's a particular effective as see plenty of them missed, particular the Balotelli stutter types ones.
Not seen it but from that still it's in a natural position so no offence.
It was given as a penalty so presumably he's leaned into it and deliberately handled it
This is a potent example of the difference between an attacking and defensive free kick at the top level.
There is absolutely no offence here, the way the laws are written you can justify most decisions doesn't mean it was objectively correct.
If anything Maguire is the one who steps in to...
Wheel this out again. Since this we've had IFAB Q&As saying blatant holding is USB.
Elleray response 2022
"Can prolonged shirt pulling be considered unsporting behaviour in it's own right or does it need to
stop or interfere with a promising attack? It could be USB in its own right...
Players will still be chirping about penalty decisions long after they are given. What they have done isn't going to help your match control, not upsetting them isn't high on my priority list.
Alternatively send the goalkeeper off when he chirps after getting his yellow.
Players do this because...
There have been situations where it's less than that and they said the foul was too far back. If the Brentford players had played to the whistle and hadn't stopped they would've been able to defend it.
Yeah, once it's wide you don't have the retake option. You could probably have classed the kicking the ball away as dissent and sin-binned the goalkeeper, although that would cause a further delay obviously.
Very surprised they went that far back, if there was a missed foul by the Villa player in that corner I highly doubt they would have gone back.
Would be prudent for them to release the picture showing the ball was clearly out.
Needed a change of pace in the build-up. Ultimately she had a good view.
It's the type of dive that was so badly executed normally they wouldn't even bother appealing.
Until the defender has touched the ball having an opportunity to make a deliberate play is largely irrelevant
The ball could be at a defenders feet for 10 second's (if he hasn't touched it) but as soon as the player comes from an offside position to challenge him it's offside.
The grey area...
There's no problem with waiting to see if the rebound is scored and pulling it back for a retake if it is't.
@socal lurker If an opposition shouts in an attempt to put someone off then the penalty being missed is enough for me to say he was distracted.
A mate was assistant on a game, and the referee said he wants soft defensive free kicks all day but under no circumstances flag for an attacking free kick.
This was in front of an observer.
Usually they start telling stories about a busy assistant, bit more subtle at least.
