Awarded a penalty nobody asked for

Time plays tricks on mind so difficult to say exactly, it was all so quick, essentially (1) clip heel (2) shot (3) hits bar (4) goes out of play (5) I then blow whistle and bring it back for the initial clip of heel. I had started to draw whistle to mouth after (1) so by time got to (5) ready...

Awarded a penalty nobody asked for

Bit of a bizarre one in my match tonight. Attacker is just about to shoot in the box, as he draws his foot back defender clips the back of his heel, but attacker manages to get the shot away anyway, hits the bar and ball goes out. I award a penalty as in my view the clip on heel was careless...

    Man City Vs Real Madrid

Slightly misleading camera angle as well, to truly gauge if in or out the line should be straight up from viewpoint?

    Man City Vs Real Madrid

Some rather amusing discussions on social media around this, including VAR should have looked at it (yes, let’s ignore the fact we don’t have sideline cameras or technology), and even one TV company inventing their own hawkeye graphic

    Man City Vs Real Madrid

Somewhat pot calling the kettle black as I try not to reach for my pocket if I can, but there were a number of missed cautions for a range of infringements, quite a few stopping promising attacks for example. To be fair the ref was consistent in his high threshold though, which deserves some...

    West Ham vs Man Utd

Goes to refchat Monday morning to see the lively debate on Lindelof handball incident, but finds myself as OP! So, what do we think then, handball or not, and why do we think VAR did not review?

    Liverpool vs Spurs

Genuine question as a neutral trying to understand lotg a little better, why was Klopp given a yellow card and not a red, i.e Law 12 Sending Off offences for team officials:

    Liverpool vs Spurs

Another case of damned if we do, damned if we don’t. Seem to recall a lot of criticism that VAR getting involved too much last season!

    Sent off manager / player

Just to clarify, is the implication you sent the manager off and didn’t inform them why at that point? If that is the case, I am not condoning the subsequent behaviour but personally I have never sanctioned a player or team official without explaining why at the point of card issue. Or is it...

    Hands in the back ref!

Hi All Something I struggle to get consistency with, the line between a defender pushing an attacker in the back versus right to stand ground (prompting shouts of hands in the back ref!). Any advice on this please, what tips or general rules do you use?

    Booking the CAR?

What if the CAR was a team official, unsporting behaviour not applicable. Persistent unacceptable behaviour?

    Concussion

In addition to being a referee I am also a qualified rugby and football coach, and parent of a child who has suffered serious concussion (hospitalised). I personally find it really, really hard to ignore concussion red flags, player safety is paramount. In the scenarios painted above, does the...

    Concussion

I see in the news today UK government have released new guidance for grassroots sports around concussion, although by looks of it much of the key messaging has been in the FA guidelines published in August 2019...

    Manager v parent

The law is abundantly clear in who receives the sanction, yes. It makes no distinction or definition on ’offender’. If I have say 3 parents stood beside the coach (happens every week), I hear one of those 4 people shout “ref that was a f**cking shocking decision”, and I am not too sure who...

    Manager v parent

That’s why I say tenuous! I agree it is probably not in LOTG, and if our games had actual technical areas, spectators separate from team officials and substitutes, then it would be an even harder sell. But unfortunately it is not like that, we are often on public parks with one melee on one side...

    Manager v parent

A bit tenuous I know, but perhaps it would fall under “Where an offence is committed and the offender cannot be identified, the senior team coach present in the technical area will receive the sanction.” I have seen it work, and it is a far better outcome than the young kids having their entire...

    Pass back rebounds off post

So it does! All the players were shouting “don’t pick it up” to the keeper and nobody complained when I awarded an IDFK. Ultimately no goal was scored, so no harm and I have learnt another valuable part of the game!

    Manager v parent

I was told in my youth leagues to warn the team manager to control the behaviour of his teams parents, and if no improvement caution or send off the manager depending on the nature of abuse.

    Pass back rebounds off post

Incident today. Defender deliberately passes back, keeper misses a kick at it, ball hits post, rebounds back out and keeper picks it up. IDFK or play on?

    Fulham Suspensions

Spinning on a head of a pin I accept, but whatever Fernandes did it was certainly not dissent (protest or disagreement with a match officials decision). I agree with GraemeS, Fernandes should have been red card and 3 game minimum suspension (although noting again FA disciplinary code I posted...
